The judge who sentenced a man to eight years after he failed to stop for police and crashed his car into a shop, killing a passenger, called the incident "a piece of flagrant and obvious dangerous driving".

Judge Richard Foster said: "To any common sensed bystander the outcome was perhaps almost inevitable - that there would be a serious accident.

"You ignored the blue lights, and you disregarded your passengers screaming at you to slow down. Sadly Wanessa (pictured) was killed. Nothing this court can say or do can bring back her life."

The prosecutor said at one point the Golf did a handbrake turn and slewed sideways, but re-corrected itself and drove off again, reaching speeds up to 80mph in 30 and 20mph zones.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission inquiry continues.
