A doctor who has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for molesting young female recruits to the ambulance service during medical examinations has today been told his actions will "harm public trust in the profession'.

Judge Michael Kay QC said Lewis had "cloaked" his intentions "under the veneer of appropriate examination".

The women all said Lewis used both hands to squeeze, fondle or grope their breasts. One said he also put his hand inside her knickers during a hernia examination.

The judge went on to explain how the women had "entrusted their almost naked bodies" to Lewis but he took the opportunity to assault them for his "own sexual pleasure".

While giving evidence, Lewis said the examinations were all carried out in a "decent and honest manner".

Another victim, who was a young recruit to the ambulance service, revealed she changed base station "for fear of bumping into Dr Lewis".

The woman went on to describe how she "felt dirty" having to talk about the assault in front of complete strangers in court.

  14. Mum campaigns for higher education support for autistic sonpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

    Tony Fisher
    BBC Three Counties Radio

A Luton mother is campaigning for more support for her autistic son at university.

    Tomm Collier

Tomm Collier, 20, got a statement of needs at Barnfield College, which allowed him to receive full-time one to one support funded by Luton Borough Council, but this support does not cover higher education.

Jane Collier said he will now receive one hour of support a week - under the government's Disability Students Allowance - at the University of Bedfordshire, where he is due to start a Computer Games Development degree.

He will also get a mobile phone that he can ring and talk to someone but Ms Collier said if her son gets upset he won't think to ring the mobile.

"He probably needs just as much support if not more in this environment," she said.

The council says it is liaising with the university to try to provide the support he needs and the university said it was working with all the parties to "assess his needs and put together a package of support".

    Katy Lewis
    BBC Local Live

Spolier alert - don't read on if you haven't seen last night's Great British Bake Off - and want to watch it later.

Bedfordshire baker Candice Brown made the best of a bad situation in the show's first ever botanical week, where contestants could use anything that grows - well anything legal, anyway.

During her signature bake, coconut got stuck in the nozzle when piping meringue on to her lime, coconut and lemongrass sugar meringue pie, which meant the topping looked a bit of a mess and "very green".

"It just looks horrendous," she said, and judge Paul Hollywood agreed, saying it "tastes OK, just looks awful".

Luckily for her, taste won through and she survived another week to make it into the final six.
