  2. Small gold chip at the heart of brain injury blood testpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 29 July 2016

    David Gregory-Kumar
    Science correspondent, BBC Midlands Today

Injuries to the brain are impossible to detect at the scene of an accident.

The end result is either doctors are over cautious and patients have expensive scans they don’t need or, worse, people who appear fine drop dead a day later from a bleed on the brain.

Researchers in Birmingham hope to change all that with the first blood test for brain injury. It’s a breakthrough that would revolutionise how people are treated saving money and saving lives.

At the heart is this chip (pictured) - it's silicone with a coating of gold. It's a real working prototype of the detector and is being used with the blood of real patients from the QE Hospital. The eventual aim is to shrink this and create a detector which can be used in an ambulance or even used in a battlefield.

The thing is about libraries is - they aren't quiet anymore. You've got to give them credit [the council] where we are losing libraries and spaces in our city centre we should be saying well done. They're not taking the library away from us- just moving it. Petition all you like but look at the bigger picture. This move is crucial.

    Science correspondent, BBC Midlands Today

A new blood test to detect traumatic brain injury has been developed by scientists.

The test can be done by paramedics at the scene of an accident to see if there's any damage and does not require a brain scan.

The University of Birmingham, which developed the test, says it could save the NHS significant sums of money and wants to get it into the market "within three years".

  16. Train overcrowding: 17% of evening passengers leaving Birmingham will have to standpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 29 July 2016

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

You’re more likely to have to stand while travelling on a peak-time train in Birmingham than in any other major city in England and Wales outside London, new figures today show.

Between 08:00 and 09:00, on a “typical autumn weekday”, 20% (1 in 5) of standard class passengers on trains arriving at one of the three main Birmingham stations (New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill) are standing.

This compares with 30% at the major London terminals, but is higher than the equivalent figure for city centre stations in all the other major cities of England and Wales.

In the evening, 17% of passengers leaving one of the three Birmingham stations between 17:00 and 18:00 will be standing – that’s the same proportion as London and again higher than any other city in England and Wales.

The Birmingham figures have increased sharply over the past three years.
