  1. Pledge to help BHS workers facing redundancy in Wolverhamptonpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    The City of Wolverhampton Council is pledging to help 100 workers with a combined 524 years' service who are facing redundancy at BHS.

    The Dudley Street store is poised to cease trading next Wednesday, 3 August. All of its employees are from the city, the council said.

    The authority said a "small number" had secured work at House of Fraser, New Look and Debenhams (Birmingham) but it would work with the Department for Work and Pensions, Job Centre Plus, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), and Local Enterprise Partnership to support people hit by the announcement.

    The Birmingham Brummies raced to another big home win last night, 59-31 against Mildenhall, to stretch their lead in the National League to eight points. 

    Tom Bacon top-scored with 14 points to make the visitors feel pig sick at Perry Barr. 

    The Brummies, Cradley Heathens, Kent and Eastbourne have been holding the play-off places for some time now, but Bacon says it is too early to say whether it will stay that way.

    A company in Wolverhampton that designs toys says a new deal with Google could mean millions of pounds worth of sales. 

    Wow Stuff is already preparing products for next Christmas. 

    Managing Director Richard North has been telling us the gift that is expected to be the number one best seller this year - a cardboard headset that can be used with a smartphone to give a virtual reality experience.

    The father of Suzy Lamplugh, who has been missing for 30 years, says he has little hope left of finding out what happened to her.

    Paul Lamplugh said his estate agent daughter knew "how to live life fully but no-one taught her how to be safe".

    The 25-year-old disappeared on 28 July 1986, after going to meet a client - named as Mr Kipper - in Fulham.

    In November 2002, convicted murderer John Cannan, from Sutton Coldfield, was named as prime suspect for the murder, but there was no prosecution through insufficient evidence. Cannan, 47, has denied any involvement.

  6. Tributes to former Archers producer William Smethurstpublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    Tributes have been paid to author and producer William Smethurst, who edited BBC Radio 4's The Archers from 1978 to 1986, after his death.

    Smethurst was credited with revolutionising the show, changing its direction and bringing in the now-longest-serving writer Mary Cutler.

    Cutler said "it would not be an exaggeration to say he saved The Archers".

    Angela Piper, who has played Jennifer Aldridge in the show for more than 50 years, said Smethurst "wove the social layers of Ambridge with a great deal of colour and imagination".

    Reports in Portugal claim a trio of Benfica players could be on their way to Molineux this weekend, including Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca for £20m.

    His team-mates Helder Costa and former AC Milan midfielder Pele are also being linked with Kenny Jackett's side.

    Warwickshire's four-wicket defeat to Durham in the Royal London One-Day Cup leaves them needing a win in their final group game at Yorkshire to stand any chance of reaching the quarter finals. 

    It's the same in the T20 Blast format - as the Bears have to beat Lancashire at Old Trafford tomorrow night to reach the last eight in that competition. 

    Director of Cricket Dougie Brown says the two matches will prove if they have the character to cope under pressure.

    Car manufacturing in the West Midlands has surged and is at its highest level since the year 2000, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. 

    Across the country, almost 900,000 cars have rolled off production lines so far this year - a 13% increase on last year.

    A man has been charged over the death of a teenager in a crash 16 months ago.

    Adam Jones, 15, from Wednesbury, (pictured) died when he was hit by a car while crossing a road on his bike in West Bromwich on 26 March 2015.

    Tyrone Sadler, from Sandwell, answered bail on Wednesday and police said he was charged with causing death by driving a vehicle while unlicensed and causing death by driving a vehicle while uninsured.

    The 25-year-old has been bailed and is due to appear at Sandwell Magistrates' Court on 24 August, officers said.

    There is heavy traffic on the M42 southbound at J9 of the M6 Toll Curdworth in the roadworks area with delays back to J10 for Tamworth, drivers are warned.

    Other than that, it's one of those rare days when there appear to be few problems on the roads around Birmingham and the Black Country.
