    An MP is calling for all political parties to work together to campaign for the expansion of Birmingham Airport.

    Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant says he brought the issue up in Commons yesterday after the government backed a third runway at Heathrow, but didn't get much of an answer.

    "I remember when I was five my brother grabbing my taking me into living room, moving the coffee table to one side and telling me he was going to teach me the 'step over'," he said.

    "I started playing for Huncoat United at nine. I played left wing when I was growing up, a left wing who never tracked back," he grins. "But I was still scouted by Blackburn and I ended up signing a contract there."

    A former police officer who worked undercover and helped bring members of Birmingham's Burgar Bar Boys to justice, said more than 90% of informant money is for information about drugs offences.

    Neil Woods said: "A large proportion of that is actually just the larger organised crime groups getting rid of smaller rivals. 

    "We're actually paying for expanding the business model of the bigger gangsters."

    He was speaking as it was revealed more than £1m has been spent on police informants by West Midlands Police over the last five years.

    There's major disruption at London Marylebone rail station due to the broken rail we reported earlier.

    The station is used by Chiltern trains serving Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa and Warwick.

    Disruption is expected to continue into the rush hour.

  8. Fundraising event in memory of terror attack victimpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    A silent auction, raffle and collection will be held at Friday's basketball game between the Worcester Wolves and Newcastle Eagles to raise money in memory of a student killed in the Tunisian terror attacks of 2015.

    Joel Richards, who was 19 and from Wednesbury, died near Sousse alongside his uncle and grandfather.

    A charity was set up in conjunction with Victim Support by his mother and brother.

    All funds raised at the basketball event will go to supporting families affected by violent crime, including those affected by terrorism.

    How would you save £13.5m from a council budget? 

    It's the question being asked by Wolverhampton City Council as it seeks to make cuts in order to make savings. 

    Council tax could be raised by 3.99% as part of the consultation which is being called "‘Delivering what matters with less."

    A series of public meetings will be held to give more information and there is an online survey to fill in.

  10. Birmingham pub bombings: MP raises issue over legal aidpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    A debate is due to be held in the Commons later, external on the issue of legal aid for the families of the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings. 

    Families are still waiting to find out what kind of financial assistance they'll get ahead of a fresh inquest into the deaths. 

    Birmingham Yardley MP Jess Phillips is due to raise her concerns later.

    In September, The Home Office said it was looking at a funding request for the families ahead of inquests into the 21 deaths.

    Twenty-one people were killed in the Birmingham pub bombings. Photographs of three of the victims have never been released

    Meanwhile, the families are being recognised with a special award from the human rights group Liberty, for their fight for justice, later.

    A 21-year-old man is in a "stable" condition in hospital after he was stabbed multiple times on a street in Birmingham on Monday evening. 

    The stabbing took place in Raddlebarn Road in Selly Oak, Birmingham, at about 18:40. 

    On Monday, emergency services said the man was being treated "with life-threatening injuries" after he was stabbed "multiple times". 

    A spokeswoman for the force say no arrests have been made and this stage and inquiries are on going.

    A former undercover detective for West Midlands Police says he paid an informant £15,000 which resulted in him seizing a tonne of cannabis.     

    Ronnie Howard, who worked for the force for 30 years, said: "He gave us information over a period of 12 months which resulted in us recovering £3m worth of cannabis."

    I'm told by police that informants are often criminals themselves who in the past have helped police out for cash incentives.
