You have to offset the £1.7m against what comes in...but I'm 100% sure it's a fair bit more than the £1.7m that is paid out.

  11. What about other UK airports' expansion plans?published at 11:45 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    Tim Bowler
    Business reporter, BBC News

The government may have decided to go ahead with Heathrow's third runway, but what about the country's regional airports.

    Birmingham AirportImage source, Birmingham Airport

Last month the airport announced it was spending £100m on improvements to its facilities and infrastructure - on top of the £300m it has invested in recent years - and two years ago it extended its runway to 3,000m.

While the Airports Commission rejected the need for immediate expansion at Birmingham, saying the airport would not be operating at capacity until the mid-2040s, it left the door open for a rethink once the impact of HS2, which will have a stop at the airport, on travel patterns had become clearer.

  12. West Midlands Police spend £1m on police informants over five yearspublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    BBC WM

More than £1m has been spent on police informants by West Midlands Police over the last five years - more than half of the total amount spent across the whole region (£2m).

The force says other organisations are also paying and rewarding informants but they wouldn't tell us who else is involved, saying it could harm their "close relationship".

    Quote Message

We keep oversight of this sensitive area and work closely with the force. Policing the West Midlands is a difficult task that requires a variety of tactics. This is an essential tactic in the fight against organised crime.

David Jamieson, West Midlands police and crime commissioner

More than 180 people were injured and 21 killed when two devices exploded in the city centre in 1974.

The bombing on 21 November 1974 is widely acknowledged to have been the work of the IRA.

The original hearings, opened days after the attacks, were not continued after the jailing of six men, whose convictions were later quashed.

The inquest into the deaths is due to be re-opened next month.

  14. 'Regional airport hubs' would help boost the economypublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

Building a third runway at Heathrow Airport will make it harder to expand Birmingham in the future, according to a Midlands-based business expert.

The Heathrow plan was announced yesterday and has resulted in MP Zac Goldsmith quitting Parliament, forcing a by-election.

David Bailey, told the BBC "regional airport hubs" would be ideal for boosting trade and economy.

    Quote Message

From an economic point of view in re-balancing the economy, we want big regional airport hubs like in Germany and we want to be able to travel from Birmingham round the world and it's essential if we're going to boost export and trade in the area.

  17. £2m spent on police informants in five yearspublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

Nearly £2m has been spent by police forces across the West Midlands over the past five years on police informants.

"Covert human intelligence sources," as informants are officially termed, provide information on criminal activity.

    MoneyImage source, AP

Individual police forces have refused to go into specific detail of how the money was spent, but say it was vital in tackling a whole range of criminal activity.

West Midlands Police spent £1m over five years which is more than double the amount spent by the Staffordshire and West Mercia forces.

    Quote Message

Informants are a cost efficent for the police to detect but also prevent crime. These latest figures really don't surprise me because the police have been using informants for some time. I do emphasise this use of informants is highly regulated and it can save the tax payer money in the long run
