    The Government's been accused of losing its grip on prisons following the riot at HMP Birmingham.

    Justice secretary Liz Truss told the Commons yesterday afternoon that 380 prisoners had been moved from the Winson Green jail following Friday's 12-hour disturbance. 

    Yesterday, the chairman of the prison's Independent Monitoring Board said Liz Truss ignored its warnings about potential trouble. 

    In the Commons, Edgbaston Labour MP Gisela Stuart questioned whether the justic secretary had read the report. Ms Truss said she had.

    A lorry has ploughed into a busy Christmas market in the heart of Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 48.  

    A tourist from Birmingham described what he saw. Mike Fox was shopping at the market when he narrowly avoided being hit by the vehicle.

    Mike Fox said the act "was definitely deliberate".

    He added that he helped people who appeared to have broken limbs, and that others were trapped under Christmas stands.

    A small aircraft has been filmed making an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport.

    The crew of the private medical plane radioed ahead for assistance on Monday and was met by fire engines on the runway.

    A spokeswoman for the airport said there were no obvious issues with the aircraft.

    The damage to HMP Birmingham after Friday's riot continues to be assessed, justice secretary Liz Truss has told the Commons.

    Prisoners gained control of four wings. Two suffered superficial damage, while damage to the other two was more serious.

  18. Total of 380 prisoners transferred from HMP Birmingham following 12-hour disturbancepublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    A total of 380 prisoners have been transferred from HMP Birmingham since Friday's riot which took more than 12 hours to bring under control, Liz Truss, justice secretary, has just told the Commons.

    She announced an investigation into the disturbance, saying it would be led by Sarah Payne a former director of the Welsh prison service.

    The incident began at about 09:15 when six prisoners "climbed onto netting", taking keys when officers intervened.

    Prisoners gained control of a wing, then another and later another two. All four were not secured until 22:00.

  20. Man who died in stabbing named by murder detectivespublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Detectives have named a man who was fatally stabbed at the weekend as Ibrahim Ismail.Police said a murder inquiry was launched, external after the 23-year-old was found outside the Raxo Shisha lounge on Moseley Street, Highgate, at about 03.30 on Saturday.

    He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
