    Three fire crews have been sent to HMP Birmingham just days after a riot at the prison

    West Midlands Fire Service confirmed it was called to the Winson Green site just before 13:00.

    It's understood to have been a false alarm in two separate areas of the prison.

    A thief who hid a phone in her bra after stealing it from a man on a bus took off her clothes to "prove" she did not have it when challenged by passengers, West Midlands Police says, external.

    The force said Ann O’ Halloran, 35, was a prolific offender and had passed the phone to an accomplice.

    She stole coats, handbags and mobile phones, targeting people on public transport and in restaurants across Birmingham, said police, adding O’ Halloran had been made subject to a criminal behaviour order, banning her from all cafés, coffee shops, bars, pubs and restaurants in the city centre for three years.  

    She was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates Court to a year in prison.

  5. Police 'review' security measures in Birmingham following Berlin attackpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    The installation of bollards at Birmingham's Christmas market was part of the original security plan and not a result of specific intelligence relating to the city, West Midlands Police says in the wake of the attack in Berlin.

    The force says it is increasing patrols and reviewing "police response" after a lorry killed 12 people last night when it ploughed into a Christmas market in the German city. 

    A statement said: "The threat to the UK from international terrorism remains at severe, meaning an attack is considered to be highly likely. We ask that people remain alert, vigilant but not alarmed and report anything suspicious to us at the earliest possible opportunity."

    It added: "Our policing tactics and security measures are being reviewed on a daily basis –we have a dedicated police response in place for the market and we, along with our partners, are working around the clock to keep Birmingham and our other cities as safe as can be."

    Thousands of paper angels have been suspended from the ceiling at Lichfield Cathedral, external in the run up to Christmas. 

    Organisers say all this week the outside of the building is being lit up, with images projected onto the west front.

    They say people who come to their evening light shows are then being invited to go into the cathedral through a "forest" of Christmas trees. 

    The cathedral says the tour then ends with visitors able to see the 10,000 paper angels hung from the ceiling, with messages of peace written by school pupils.
