    A large sinkhole which appeared after flooding caused a road collapse in Birmingham will not be filled for weeks.

    Severn Trent Water says it hopes to start repairs in the middle of January.  

    Engineers have been assessing how to fill the hole in Harborne Road, which was caused by flooding from a burst water main last month.

    The pipe is buried six metres underground. 

    Severn Trent is stabilising the area, so the road can be reopened without affecting local water supplies.

    The Electric Light Orchestra are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

    The Birmingham band will be enshrined in the annual induction ceremony on 7 April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. 

    The inductees were among a list of 19 nominees chosen by a committee of more than 900 people.

    An exhibit on the 2017 inductees will open in Cleveland on 30 March.

    Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been banned for five games after he was found guilty of using racially abusive language by an independent panel.

    He has also been fined £100,000 and ordered to attend a Football Association education course.

    Shelvey, 24, had a personal hearing to challenge the charge after an incident with Wolves' Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss in 17 September's 2-0 defeat.

    In the wake of the Berlin attack, I’ve been to Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market.

    There was an atmosphere of defiance among shoppers who were determined to carry on as usual.

    Cathy Sotillo, from Canterbury, was in the city visiting her daughter Helen, a student at the University of Birmingham.

    She said they wanted to "express solidarity" with those in Berlin.

    "We thought we would come here to express allegiance and a sense of resilience and a refusal to be cowed by the events of last night."
