The Labour MEP Sion Simon has formally launched his campaign to be elected West Midlands "Metro Mayor" in just over three months.
He told an invited audience at a training centre in Wolverhampton that, if elected, he would fight for fairer Government funding for the West Midlands, compared with Scotland, Wales and even other regions of England.

Watch out for some overnight frosts this weekend as temperatures fall, with lows of -1C (30F) tonight.
Poundland has been fined £134,000 after it admitted food hygiene breaches that included rodent-damaged chocolate Santas in Birmingham.
The breaches pertain to its two stores in Corporation Street. In addition to the gnawed festive treats at the larger of the pair, mouse droppings were found on boxes of chocolates.
A judge, who said she had shopped at both stores, ordered the Willenhall-based company to pay costs of £18,162.
People in Birmingham have been joining those nationwide who are unfurling banners on bridges as Donald Trump takes office as the 45th president of the United States.
The gesture is being made by those aligning themselves to a movement called Bridges Not Walls.
Participants are making their peaceful pledge - to "build bridges, not walls" - following an election campaign from President Trump that featured controversial statements about Muslim and Mexican people, plus an episode in which he appeared to mock a disabled reporter.

What a great couple of days it's been for Dan Evans.
The world number 51 has today upset Australian 27th seed Bernard Tomic with a 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) victory, taking him to the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Solihull-born Evans received a congratulatory message from his favourite football team, fellow British tennis player Jamie Murray and rugby league star Sam Burgess.

Stoke City, external boss Mark Hughes says the deal to bring West Bromwich Albion, external's Saido Berahino to the club is not imminent.
It's believed the Potters have offered about £6m for the 23-year-old (pictured above) in this transfer window, while the Baggies would like closer to £10m.
Hughes gave an update on how negotiations are going at his press conference this morning.

A father charged with murdering his two young children who died after a house fire has appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Mohammed Endris, 46, spoke only to confirm his name.
Siblings Saros Endris, aged eight, and Leanor, six, died following the blaze at their home on Holland Road, Hamstead, Birmingham, on 28 October.
Judge James Burbidge QC said Mr Endris would remain in custody until his plea hearing which is due to take place at Birmingham Crown Court on 22 February.
Birmingham make their fifth January window signing, former Fulham winger Kerim Frei from Besiktas.

The rail union RMT said it was balloting its 523 members over the proposed imposition of security contractors on trains.
The union said the company's move was made without agreement. The ballot closes on 2 February.
London Midland said it was "very disappointed" the RMT was threatening action.
The worker who lost a leg after vehicles crashed at Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) plant in Solihull says "it is stressful having to rely on others".
Mark Widnall's leg was crushed in the collision in February 2015, according to union Unite whose legal services team has been fighting for compensation on his behalf. On Thursday, JLR was fined £900,000 in connection with the crash.
Unite says Mr Widnall, 59, from Coventry, has had to move house to accommodate his needs after his injured leg was amputated above the knee.
He said: “This is the first stage [JLR's fine] in drawing a line under my accident but I have been left with a prosthetic limb which means I can’t do things I used to do, like going out dancing."
