  14. 'Short stay' travellers site in Sandwell aims to reduce illegal encampments published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Rob Mayor
Black Country Political Reporter, BBC WM

Sandwell Council is planning to spend £200,000 on a "short stay" travellers site in Smethwick.

The authority says it will give police the power to move on illegal camps elsewhere in the borough, which, it adds, cost more than £400,000 to clear up last year.

It is thought the site would be the first of its kind in Birmingham and the Black Country and would see travellers paying £80 per caravan, with a £250 deposit, for a stay of no more than three months at the site near Black Patch Park.

Before a similar site was opened in Telford and Wrekin back in 2013, that area saw as many as 250 illegal encampments each year - down to 16 in 2016.

Critics say the scheme simply moves any people who leave rubbish into other areas.
