    Some people say if you drop something on the floor and pick it up in less than five seconds it's ok to eat, but is it safe ?

    Food safety expert, Professor Anthony Hilton, from Aston University, says the "five-second rule" for eating things dropped on the floor is usually correct.

    He says if food is not on the floor for very long it won't have time to pick up harmful bugs, so unless it's got dirt on it you can actually see it should be okay to eat.

    The leader of Birmingham City Council has defended a proposed hike on Sunday parking charges.

    On-street parking in the area near Colmore Row currently costs £2.50 for two hours on a Sunday, but from the start of April it is going up to £6.

    Labour's John Clancy said he "regretfully" had to look at ways of "raising revenue in the city" after £600m of cuts in the past six years.

  6. 'Trojan Horse' governor bids to overturn schools banpublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    The former chairman of the Birmingham education trust at the centre of the so-called "Trojan Horse" allegations of hardline Muslims attempting to takeover city schools, is appealing his ban from any involvement in schools.

    Tahir Alam, chairman of governors at Park View School in Alum Rock, Birmingham, from 1997 to 2014, and chairman of a trust managing the school, was banned in September 2015 after the Secretary of State considered evidence from a government inquiry.

    A three-strong tribunal in London has begun hearing his appeal.

    The provenance of the so-called Trojan Horse letter has never been established, but a government inquiry,  led by former counter-terrorism chief Peter Clarke , found "sustained action, carried out by a number of associated individuals, to introduce an intolerant and aggressive Islamist ethos into a few schools in Birmingham". 

    It was one of several inquiries to be carried out. 

    Mr Alam previously called the ban an "abuse of authority" and described the allegations made in the reports as "completely false".

    Staffordshire Police say they went into the High Street branch in Pattingham at around 05:45 today. 

    Officers say they threatened staff with the bat and then locked them in the toilet while they stole the cash and cigarettes.

    Witnesses to a fatal car crash in Stechford are being urged to pass information on to the police.

    Juel Downer, aged 24, from Bordesley Green, died in hospital four days after suffering serious injuries on 24 February. 

    The black Seat Leon in which he was a passenger hit a black VW Golf at the junction of Stechford Road and Hodge Hill Road at around 22:25, according to West Midlands Police, external .

  9. Protest at BMW over closure of car maker's final salary pension scheme published at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    BMW workers are staging a protest outside the Hams Hall engine plant in Coleshill against the car maker's plans to close their final salary pension scheme.

    It follows figures from the company last week showing a surge in net profits and sales. 

    Simon Powell, from the Unite union, said workers "deserved better".

    BMW says it is very proud of its excellent pension provision in the past but they want to protect pension provision for the future.

    Lights, bus shelters, benches, bollards and other features of Rubery village will undergo improvements after a £100,000 funding package was agreed.

    The largest chunk of the money, £75,000, has come from Bromsgrove District Council, while Worcestershire County Council has put in £25,000.

    Part of the plan is to include a so-called "quality charter" for future works and to ensure the improved features are maintained.

    A driver was caught accessing online banking on his phone while on the M5, while holding a bank statement in his other hand.

    A driving instructor was also fined for using a mobile while he had a learner in his car, West Midlands Police said.

    On 1 March, penalties for drivers caught using a phone doubled to six points and a £200 fine. 

    In a week-long police clampdown, external 261 distracted drivers were caught.

    Burglars have broken into a house in Staffordshire , external that was in the middle of being renovated following a fatal house fire.

    Staffordshire Police say Colin Dunn died in the blaze at the home on Six Ashes Road, Bobbington in November.

    The force says his widow was preparing to move back in having lived there for 32 years. 

    Officers say the burglary happened between Thursday and Monday and the thieves took TVs and a watch which has sentimental value for Mrs Dunn. 

    Staffordshire Police say she's been left "deeply distressed and affected" by the burglary.
