    If you're travelling from Birmingham New Street this morning, expect it to be busy as people make their way to Cheltenham Racecourse.

    Network Rail says it's having a busy day with lots of queues.

  2. Inquest into death of eight-year-old boy is adjournedpublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The inquest into the death of eight-year-old from Redditch who died a day after being discharged from hospital has been adjourned until 28 June.

    Callum Cartlidge suffered a cardiac arrest at home in Redditch after developing suspected sepsis, the BBC has been told. He had been diagnosed with tonsilitis.

    Paramedics were allegedly told to take him 18 miles (29km) to Worcestershire Hospital and not nearby Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, which  stopped admitting children to A&E in September.

    Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is investigating what happened.

    An inquest into the death of an 8-year-old boy from Redditch is expected to begin later. 

    The Alexandra Hospital was nearest Callum Cartlidge's home but when he went into cardiac arrest he was taken to a hospital further away at which he died. The Alex has not admitted children to A&E since September of last year.

    Last year, children's inpatient services at the Alexandra Hospital were moved to Worcester nearly 20 miles away because of a shortage of junior doctors.

    The trust running the site said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding Callum's death.

  5. Signalling problem causing disruptionpublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

     A  signalling problem, external  near Hamstead is causing disruption to rail services between Rugeley Trent Valley and Birmingham New Street. 

    Trains may be delayed by up to 40 minutes and road transport will shuttle between Rugeley Trent Valley and Hednesford.

    The disruption is expected to continue until 11am.

    A burst water main in Halesowen is affecting water supplies this morning.

    Severn Trent Water says customers, external in the B63 and DY9 postcode areas may have little or no water this morning.

    Up to three lorry-loads of waste, dumped at the Enville Estate just off the Bridgnorth to Stourbridge Road, will cost thousands to clean up. 

    The fly-tippers were spotted on Tuesday afternoon by a passer-by who was then chased away by men in balaclavas.

  9. 2022 Commonwealth Games: Birmingham expresses interestpublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Birmingham has expressed interest in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban was stripped of the right yesterday. 

    The city had already expressed an interest in staging the 2026 Games, as well as Liverpool.

    Here in Birmingham we are already in the advanced stages of producing a detailed feasibility study on what would be needed for a truly memorable Games in the city. That is due to be completed in the coming weeks and we are in close contact with the government about the developing situation."

    The Commonwealth Games Federation said it was searching for potential replacements for Durban.

    A detailed feasibility study is due to be published next month.

    "It's just not safe enough for inmates" - that's the damning conclusion of a report into Swinfen Hall young offenders institute in Staffordshire, released by the chief inspector of prisons.

    The Category C prison near Lichfield holds more than 600 young men aged between 18 and 25.

    The report says the prison has deteriorated since its last inspection three years ago with rising levels of violence and squalid living conditions. 

    A new governor has now been brought in and more staff are to be recruited.

    Cigarettes have been stolen by thieves who forced their way into a Tesco store in Cannock., external

    Staffordshire Police say they got in in the early hours of this morning to the Heath Way branch. 

    Officers say, as well as the cigarettes, the men got away in a car with other high-value items.

  16. Birmingham in contact with Government after planned Games host ruled out published at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Birmingham is "in contact with the Government" after it was announced Durban in South Africa would no longer be host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games , the city council says.

    Birmingham has been bidding to host the games four years later in 2026.

    Liverpool, which has also been bidding for 2026, has expressed an interest in becoming the 2022 host. 

    Cllr Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We are aware of the decision from the Commonwealth Games Federation to seek a new host for the 2022 games."
