  3. Mayor for the Midlands: Special debate programmes announcedpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    Three special debate programmes will be broadcast by the BBC in the West Midlands as part of the coverage of the Metro Mayor elections.

    A live television debate, presented by politics editor Patrick Burns, will see the six candidates going head-to-head in front of a studio audience on Thursday 20 April at 22:45.

    Coventry University and Bourneville College will host debates to be broadcast on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on Thursday 18 April and BBC WM on 27 April.

    The metro mayor will represent Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Woverhampton -  full details of the candidates can be found here.

  5. Exhibition for 'one million' letter writerpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    A woman from Birmingham who pledged to write "one million lovely letters" to strangers around the world has an exhibition opening in Digbeth today. 

    Three years ago, Jodi Ann Bickley from King's Heath began writing hand-written correspondence as a way to stay positive after being diagnosed with depression and ME.

    It's been so successful she's now had to recruit ten people to help her.

    From complaints about overcrowded vehicles to potholes - we've been in Wolverhampton on the Listen Up bus speaking to people about their experiences of public transport in the West Midlands.

    The public transport system is an issue that the region's Metro Mayor will oversee when elected  on 4 May.

    Being part of a marathon has long been the dream of Bethan Griffiths, who has cerebral palsy.

    The 22-year-old from from Stourbridge took part in the Brighton Marathon with the help of Becky Amor and Andy Woolway, from the National Star College in Gloucestershire.

    They pushed her in an all-terrain wheelchair for 25 miles but she was determined to cross the finish line unaided.

    Bethan wanted to take part in the race in memory of her mother, Amanda, who died of motor neurone disease last year. 

  11. Fundraising effort for woman who almost drowned saving young boy published at 16:56 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    A Stourbridge woman who almost drowned while rescuing a young boy from the sea has told the BBC she's determined to be back in her own home by Christmas. 

    Deb Drew spent months in a coma following the incident at Woolacombe Beach, Devon, in August 2014.

    Her family were told three times to prepare themselves for the worse, but Deb defied the odds. 

    A huge fundraising effort is under way to get her the wheelchair she needs. She lives in a brain injury rehabilitation unit in Hall Green, but says she dreams of making it home for good by the end of the year.

  12. Metro mayor election: Your love and loathing of buses, train and tram published at 16:45 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    Today I've been in Wolverhampton speaking to people about public transport.

    It wasn't all late buses and overcrowded trains - some people I spoke to loved getting the bus into Wolverhampton and have even made friends.

    That said, Charlotte uses the buses daily in Wolverhampton and says they are "often late".

    She says: "Sometimes they are up to 20 minutes late and you don't get an explanation why. I'm often late to work. I have set off from work 30 minutes early just in case the bus is late."  

    Devon Collins gets the bus from Sedgley to Wolverhampton daily.

    She said: "The bus is OK - it's just late and infrequent. I'm late for work or late getting home."

    Tomorrow I'm at Sandwell Valley Country Park speaking to people about the West Midlands Metro Mayor and more of the issues they'll be looking at when elected.

  14. Police dog tribute to fundraising boypublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    A new West Midlands Police dog has been named after an Alvechurch school boy, Finlay, who raised thousands of pounds for charity before he died of a brain tumour. 

    Finlay, who was 11 when he died, always dreamed of becoming a police officer - he managed to raise over £150,000 for Brain Tumour Research before he lost his battle with the disease.

    Penny Church, Finn's mum, she says this would have been a dream come true for her son.
