  1. Man who stabbed dog to death banned from keeping animalspublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    A man who killed his dog and left his body to rot in his flat for several days has been sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and given 250 hours of community service.

    Wayne Bishop, 30, of Weston-Super-Mare admitted killing his dog, General, in a moment of cruelty at his flat in Droitwich when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester.

    He was banned from keeping animals for life.

    General was discovered by police officers with a stab wound to his chest after neighbours raised concern of the stench coming from the property.

    Bishop initially claimed he stabbed his dog after he attacked him but later admitted this was not true and that he had stabbed General in anger.

    A rare first edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy has come up for auction in Wolverhampton.

    The novels by JRR Tolkien, who spent much of his childhood in Birmingham, are expected to go for between £500 and £800.

    A soldier is being treated in hospital in Birmingham following an incident at a military firing range in which two soldiers died.

    The government says there will be a full investigation into what happened at Castlemartin in Pembrokeshire after a Royal Tank regiment training exercise on Wednesday.

  12. Bromsgrove MP heads to Kensington over Grenfell tower block firepublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid, the secretary of state for communities and local government, says the government "will do whatever it takes" to improve safety in tower blocks following the fire in west London which killed at least 17 people.

    He told BBC Breakfast he wanted to reassure people living in similar tower blocks across the country, saying an emergency review would start straight away but would be informed by the fire investigation report into the tragedy.

    Mr Javid said he was going to the area today and wanted to make sure the council owning the tower block was suitably assisted during the fire's aftermath.

    It's the 22 year old's first major tournament and he tees off in the second round at about 19:00.

    Rai carded a one over 73 in his first appearance at a major, five shots better than Rory McIlroy who's returning from a month out with a rib injury.

    A family of seven have been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation following a fire at their house in Bordesley Green.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says it was called to the property in Keeley Street at about 07:50.

    The service said all seven had made it outside the property when it arrived but the building had been badly affected.

    They were taken to hopsital, with a 53-year-old father the worst affected after helping his family escape.

  15. Manchester victim's daughter thanks 'guardian angels'published at 11:11 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    The daughter of a man, from Hagley, injured in the Manchester bomb has written a note thanking nurses "for saving my dad".

    The note, signed with a heart, reads: “Just want to say a big thank you to Liahna and Martin for saving my dad! I’m so thankful to them and they deserve the very best. Also wishing Brogan Jean a speedy recovery".

    Garry Farr says his 11-year-old daughter Amy "is generally a bright and bubbly girl" and has managed to maintain that despite the attacks.

    "We’ll be keeping an eye on her over the coming weeks because there are things she’s seen that no 11-year-old should see so she may need some help with that as time goes on."

  17. Mistakes in Kevin Nunes case a 'terrible' situation - outgoing police chiefpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    The outgoing chief constable of Staffordshire Police says mistakes were made in the investigation of the 2002 murder of Kevin Nunes, a suspected drugs dealer from Wolverhampton.

    Jane Sawyers is retiring today after more than 30 years in the force.

    She was the head of professional standards there when 20-year-old Mr Nunes was killed in a suspected gangland shooting in Pattingham, Staffordshire. Five men were convicted of his murder but were later cleared.

    She said "it is terrible that mistakes were made and no one has been brought to justice".

    Seventy clubs will find out their opponents in the first round of the League Cup later on.

    All 24 League Two clubs, all 24 League One sides and 22 of the 24 Championship teams will be involved.

    Those numbers include Walsall, Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

    Premier League West Brom will enter in the second round.

    A father caught up in the Manchester bomb attack with his 11-year-old daughter has been speaking for the first time and says he is lucky to be alive.

    Garry Farr, from Hagley, had to have surgery the day after the explosion and says he was saved by a trained nurse who made a tourniquet for his leg using two belts.
