    A Birmingham intern for Commonwealth War Graves Commission has been guiding visitors to Ypres, Beligum, round Battle of Passchendaele graves.

    Alisha Saleh, 21, lead The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the grave of Victoria Cross recipient Lt Rupert Hallowes.

    She said: "I took them around the cemetery and showed them the graves and told them some personal stories [of those killed]."

    Ms Saleh said Lt Hallowes "would stand on the parapet encouraging the soldiers and run back to get supplies as bullets and shells were going past him".

    Spit and bite guards will be issued to 4,500 West Midlands Police officers over the next three months.

    Campaign groups say the hoods - to be worn by suspected offenders - are degrading.

    The force said that in 2016, 231 officers in the region were spat on, leaving them at risk of diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis.

    Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “The introduction of spit guards has been a difficult, but necessary decision to protect our officers.

    “The police protect the public, it is therefore important we protect our officers."

  4. Bus driver 'kept injured teenager alive' by talking to him about footballpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    A bus driver from Perry Barr is said to have helped save a teenager's life after he was thrown under his bus when he was hit by a passing car.

    Desmond Johnson crawled under the bus to help the 16 year old and kept him conscious until paramedics arrived.

    He said: "He kept saying he wanted to go to sleep so I kept talking to him about football and kept him conscious until the paramedics came."

    Mr Johnson has since been awarded an outstanding act of good citizenship award by the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner.

    Ian Bell's side chased down 176 to win by five wickets - leaving them level on points at the top of the group with five matches to play.

    The victory takes the Bears level on points with Yorkshire at the top of the North Group, where they are joined by Derbyshire, who beat Leicestershire by seven wickets in a low-scoring game.

    Delays due to repairs on the M5 are set to last until April 2019.

    The work is thought to be the largest concrete repair job in the UK and involves removing more than 30,000 tonnes of the stuff.

    Only two lanes are operating in each direction and there's a 30mph speed limit. In about seven months time, the lanes will be switched.

    Catherine Brookes, regional director of Highways England, advised drivers "to consider whether you can use alternative routes" while repairs are under way.

    A Birmingham lap dancing club has ceased trading, according to the council which had with police been investigating reports that customers were drugged and relieved of huge sums of money via their credit cards.

    The Broad Street branch of Legs 11 earlier today had its alcohol licence revoked amid concerns over serious crime listed in a joint report by the local authority and West Midlands force. It followed its sexual entertainment venue licence being revoked earlier this month.

    The report said up to £93,042 had been taken from customers.

    Chris Neville, the council's head of licensing, said the venue had ceased trading and added of today's proceedings: "The [licensing] committee obviously made the right decision in the circumstances."

    Following complaints that customers' credit cards had been charged large sums, Mr Neville said CCTV at the club had been reviewed and people "were not able to make rational decisions".

    He said the council would now look at how similar venues in the city were run.

  10. Police officers in 'arrest' video 'not suspended'published at 15:13 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    West Midlands Police says the officers featured in a video "relating to arrests" in Birmingham yesterday "have not been restricted or suspended".

    The footage, shared on social media, features tussles between plain clothes policemen and members of the public.

    The force says the officers have been placed on "non public-facing duties" while an assessment of the footage is carried out.

    It says a 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of a public order offence has been released under investigation.

    It happened on Coldfield Drive at about 17:00 on Friday, external.

    The West Mercia force said a 50-year-old motorist was approached by a man and woman at the site. On being racially abused, he got out of his car and a "verbal altercation" took place between the two men before a member of the public intervened.

    Nobody was injured, police said.

    Khurram Rahi appeared before magistrates in Birmingham earlier and spoke only to confirm his age and address. He is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 28 August.

    He did not enter a plea, but his solicitor indicated he intended to plead not guilty.

    The girl was raped at Witton station some time between last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and was raped again as she flagged down a vehicle when she left the site - an attack for which police continue to search for a suspect.

    A charity supporting families living in poverty in Birmingham says it's devastated after its new youth centre was left half-built.

    Free-at-Last, based in Nechells, now has to raise £400,000 to deliver the "much-needed" facility, after a cash-strapped construction firm left the project in March.

    The charity has been supporting local families since 1999 by giving hundreds of children access to activities to enrich their lives.

    Unless the funding can be found quickly, there's a real possibility the centre may never be finished.

    Businesses in Worcestershire adversely affected by the latest lane closures on the M5 have been told they're unlikely to get any compensation.

    For the past week the motorway has been down to one lane north of junction 4a to try to encourage drivers to use the M42 instead, avoiding delays around bridge repair work at Oldbury.

    However, it's caused long delays for drivers and homeowners say their properties could be damaged by heavy goods vehicles choosing to avoid the motorways all together.
