    A man has been jailed for a machete attack, external at a family home in Hall Green.

    James Smith, 32, from Malvern, was sentenced to 12 years after pleading guilty to threatening the family-of-four when he broke in and demanded money before fleeing empty handed.

    He was initially sentenced to eight years at Birmingham Crown Court last Friday, but four years were added as the judge deemed him to be a dangerous offender.

  2. Crackdown catches hundreds of motorists driving under influencepublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    More than 200 motorists have been caught driving under the influence, external of drink or drugs in June, police say.

    A month-long operation saw officers target those suspected of breaking the law and putting themselves and others at risk.

    The crackdown was part of a national campaign which ran throughout June.

    A Birmingham pub where a man was stabbed to death following a fight has lost its licence.

    Daniel Baird was fatally stabbed at the Forge Tavern pub in Digbeth, last month.

    Birmingham City Council initially suspended the pub's licence after a hearing, requested by West Midlands Police days after the murder.

    The same committee has now revoked the license following a full review hearing.

    A man has been charged with wounding after a woman was taken to hospital with multiple stab injuries in Lozells, West Midlands Police said.

    The 42-year-old allegedly attacked the woman in her 40s at an address in Wills Street just after 14:30 on Monday. He will appear before Magistrates Court later.

    Police added she is expected to make a full recovery.

  9. Nursery crash: Lucky no-one seriously injuredpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    Ambulance workers said it was lucky no-one was seriously hurt when a van hit a nursery following a four-car crash.

    It happened outside Happy Days Nursery in Hagley Road West, Quinton.

    A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crew arrived they found a white panel van was significant damage to the front passenger side.

    "Close by a Porsche Cayenne was resting against the wall of the nursery and a second panel van. It had very substantial front end damage.

    “The driver of the first van, a 63-year-old man, was complaining of rib and seatbelt pain. He had been able to get out of vehicle himself. After an assessment and pain relief at the scene, he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham as a precaution.

    “The 22-year-old man driving the Porsche had some minor seatbelt pain. He didn’t want pain relief or to go to hospital so was discharged with advice."

    No-one within the nursery was hurt.

    Shots have been fired in Birmingham in the latest violent incident in a recent upsurge in gun and knife crime.

    Since June, eight people have been killed in fatal stabbings with three people losing their lives in separate incidents last weekend.

    Since the summer there have been 57 shootings across the West Midlands - more than Greater Manchester, Merseyside and West Yorkshire combined.

  11. Dalian Atkinson investigation nears completionpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    The investigation into the death of former Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson is nearing completion, the Independent Police Complaints Commission has said.

    He died after being shot by a police Taser in Telford last August and the IPCC has interviewed three West Mercia Police officers under criminal caution.

    The IPCC said it had also spoken to 15 other officers and another 15 people who witnessed the event, along with paramedics.

    The report is now waiting on pathology and toxicology reports and the IPCC said that once the investigation is published it will consider whether misconduct proceedings against the three officers are appropriate and the Crown Prosecution Service will be asked to make a decision on possible criminal charges.

    On Twitter, a paramedic said , externalthere were no serious injuries, one driver was taken to hospital and one was discharged at the scene.

    Children were inside the privately-owned nursery, Happy Days, but were unharmed.

    A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

    West Midlands Police and British Transport Police have arrested the man in connection with the double rape of a 14-year-old girl at Witton railway station last month.

  14. Walsall Council defends plans to purchase Saddlers shopping centrepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    Walsall Council has defended its decision to buy the Saddlers Centre for £13m at a time when they're axing jobs and closing libraries.

    The authority says purchasing the centre will generate revenue, external and it'll appoint advisors to run the centre with the hope of making £10m over the next five years.

    The local authority says it will borrow money from the Government in order to make the purchase and claim they'll make over £800,000 a year in profit.

    The Bears are bottom of the table but boosted their slim survival chances by beating last year's champions.

    Despite taking 19 points from the capital, Warwickshire still face an uphill battle to avoid relegation, sitting 28 points behind sixth-placed Surrey.

    They're also likely to lose all-round Chris Woakes (pictured) who took five wickets and scored a half-century but England are likely to want him for their three-Test series against West Indies.

    There are fears that the bin strikes in Birmingham could damage the city's 2022 Commonwealth Games bid.

    Residents have told BBC WM they are worried about Birmingham's reputation as the saga continues to roll on and make national press, with the strikes now in their sixth week.

    The team behind the city's Commonwealth bid say the strike needs to be seen in the context of the games, as they are five years away and the city's track record in delivering top sporting events.

    The former Sheffield United forward opened the scoring with a calm finish just before the half-hour mark.

    Midfielder David Davis then slotted in before Adams poked in from a corner.

    After the break, Robert Tesche headed in the fourth and Adams completed his treble, before Panutche Camara's fine finish gave Crawley a late consolation.
