  3. Baby ashes scandal: Council 'will work with parents' on memorialpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 3 October 2017

A council has promised to fund a memorial for the victims of the baby ashes scandal in Shrewsbury and says it will work with the group representing parents.

Rhiannon Davies, whose daughter Kate, (pictured) was one of the 60 children whose ashes weren't recovered at Emstrey crematorium, has criticised Shropshire Council for waiting until bereaved families approached it before agreeing to erect a memorial.

A BBC Radio Shropshire investigation uncovered historic failings at the crematorium, which meant no ashes were returned for children up to one-year-old between 1996 and 2012.

In a statement, the council said it was approached in July by two of the parents "on a confidential basis" and it was "keen to hear and consider what they had to say".

    Quote Message

The council has agreed to fund a fitting memorial to all of the children and we want to work with Action for Ashes [the group representing the parents of the children] so that this would be led by the parents, rather than by the council."
