    Western Power Distribution said engineers have been working through the night to restore power to homes in the Midlands, South Wales and South West.

    Some 5,500 homes and businesses are without power this morning, down from 11,000 earlier.

    Western Power Distribution expects many of the remaining homes will be back on electricity by midday.

    With temperatures not set to rise any time soon a weather warning for ice, external remains in place until at least 11:00 today across the whole of the West Midlands.

    The Met Office says ice patches could have formed on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

    About 300 schools across Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and south Cheshire are closed today because of snow and sub-zero temperatures.

    Most schools contact parents direct via an app or text if there's a closure, but some councils also publish lists online.

    About 30 firefighters are currently at the scene of a building fire in Corporation Street in the Caldmore area of Walsall.

    The two-storey building has flats above commercial premises, the fire service said.

    Corporation Street is closed from Caldmore Green to Rutter Street, and buses are being diverted away from the scene.

    West Midlands Ambulance service said it's been "overwhelmed" by support from volunteers and members of the public wanting to help its staff this weekend.

    Breaking

    More than 4,500 homes and businesses across the West Midlands are without electricity this morning.

    Earlier that figure was more than 11,000.

    Currently there are more than 1,500 properties without power in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and almost 600 in Shropshire, mainly around Ironbridge and the south of the county.

    If you suffer a power cut, you can call Western Power Distribution on 105 or 0800 6783105. Alternatively check the firm's website.

    National Express West Midlands says West Bromwich, Wenesdbury, Dudley and Bearwood bus stations are unable to be served by all routes.

    Services will only run on main roads that have been gritted after temporarily halting all transport last night.

    The Environment Agency in the West Midlands will be using its 4x4s to help vulnerable people in areas affected by heavy snowfall.

    Dave Throup, the agency's manager in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, tweeted that their staff and 4x4s will be "available to help vulnerable people and allow patients to get to medical appointments".

    National Rail has warned passengers to check with their train operators before travelling this morning.

    Chiltern Railways, the CrossCountry network, Great Western Railway, Virgin Trains, services across Wales and the West Midlands Trains network were all affected on Sunday.

    It also warned that East Midlands trains could face delays.
