    Thousands of bees have been stolen from apiaries in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire over the past six years, data suggests.

    The West Mercia police area is said to be joint-worst for the problem in England and Wales alongside Lincolnshire.

    The British Beekeepers Association, which compiled the figures, said 14 hive thefts had been reported in the three Midlands counties in that time.

    The group said some queen bees could fetch up to £180 each and a colony could sell for £200.

    It also said that as beekeeping was becoming more popular, novices who "choose not to go on formal courses" were "more likely to take up the offer of a hive from a stranger".

    Shrewsbury Town's Paul Hurst says there is nothing in the speculation linking him with the vacant managerial position at Sheffield Wednesday.

    He was born in the city, is a boyhood Wednesday fan and has admirers after guiding unfancied Shrewsbury to a promotion push in League One.

    Hurst said the link was "flattering" but was just a reflection of the performance of his team this season.

    Shrewsbury remain second in League One after their draw with top-of-the-table Wigan yesterday.

    Western Power Distribution has apologised to customers affected by outages caused by overnight snow and ice.

    The power supplier said more than 13,000 homes in the East and West Midlands were without power this morning.

    A spokeswoman tells me the worst affected areas are Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and north Warwickshire, with about 7,000 customers still without power. Engineers are looking to fix more than 100 faults.

    Power is expected to be restored by about 18:00.

    This cold weather is forecast to stay, with the Met Office warning temperatures in the West Midlands could drop as low as -5C (23F) overnight, turning wet roads icy.

    A police officer is recovering in hospital from a broken leg after being kicked while attending a "domestic incident" on Christmas Day.

    Staffordshire Police says the officer was hurt while trying to arrest a man at an address in Hanbury, Burton-on-Trent.

    A 23-year-old man has been charged with wounding / inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and is due to appear before Cannock magistrates later today.

    Deputy chief constable of Staffordshire Police, Nick Baker, took to Twitter to say the injured officer required an operation.

    Western Power Distribution (WPD) says power should be restored to thousands of homes across the Midlands by 18:00 this evening.

    It originally said it hoped to have 200 faults caused by snowfall repaired by midday.

    WPD said earlier there were more than 11,000 homes still affected - and about 7,800 of them were in the West Midlands, with Warwickshire and Worcestershire the worst affected.

    A man has been arrested after police cars and Rugeley police station were sprayed with petrol on Christmas Day.

    The 42-year-old man from the town is suspected of attempted arson with intent to endanger life.

    He is being questioned by Staffordshire Police.

    Officers spotted someone squirting fuel from a washing up bottle on Christmas Day at about 05:30.

    The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood warnings for Warwickshire this morning.

    They cover parts of the Rivers Alne, Arrow and Sence, with properties in low-lying areas said to be at risk.

    I've just spoken to Western Power which says about 11,000 homes are still without power across the Midlands - it was 13,000 earlier.

    I'm told engineers are looking to repair more than 200 faults to the network after overnight snow and ice.

    Warwickshire and Worcestershire are said to be the worst affected areas.

    A Western Power spokeswoman says there are about 7,800 affected properties in the West Midlands, and 3,600 in the East Midlands.

    Drivers are being warned to expect significant delays around the Catthorpe Interchange area where the M6, M1 and A14 meet.

    Some drivers are reporting delays of more than an hour at the spot in Leicestershire which is a major gateway out of the West Midlands for local drivers, particularly those in neighbouring Warwickshire.

  20. 'Give extra time to travel to airport'published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2017

    Birmingham Airport is advising passengers to allow extra time to travel to the site this morning due to the overnight snow.

    Last night, runways closed to clear slush and snow and re-opened just after midnight. Some flights were diverted.

    Passengers are also being advised to allow plenty of time for their journeys tomorrow.

    Currently no flights appear to be affected by delays, external although customers are advised to check before they set off.
