    The Environment Agency is "reviewing its flooding scheme" following the devastating floods in Birmingham over the weekend.

    Joe Cuthbertson, the agency's national expert, spoke about Selly Oak North and why the area wasn’t as well protected as the south of the city.

    He went on: "We will review our latest timescales for delivery - it has been delayed."

    Mr Cuthbertson also told how finger pointing is not helpful, but they are "reaching out to the community."

    West Midlands MEP Jim Carver is resigning from UKIP - saying he's found himself increasingly out of kilter with the party.

    Mr Carver, who lives in Worcestershire, says he'll see out his term in the European Parliament as an Independent.

    A man accused of murdering a van driver killed in a crash has appeared in court.

    Daniel Blount, 31, was fatally injured in the collision in Kingstanding, Birmingham, on 25 April and his two passengers were seriously hurt.

    Andre Thomas, 25, of Cradley Croft, Handsworth, Birmingham, is charged with murder.

    He remains in custody and will appear again at Birmingham Crown Court on 22 June.

  4. Schools trust looks to Northern Ireland for teacherspublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 29 May 2018

    An academy trust which operates schools in Leeds, Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent is hoping to recruit teachers in Northern Ireland in a bid to help tackle a shortage of staff in England.

    The Co-op Academies Trust, which operates 12 schools, says there are more newly qualified teachers than jobs in Northern Ireland.

    The trust currently has more than 10,000 students and employs more than 1,000 teachers and support staff - with those numbers set to quadruple by 2022, according to the Co-op.

    A young family's escaped from what's believed to be deliberate house fire in Fenton in the early hours of Monday.

    The couple and their young child got out of the property after being woken up by the smoke alarm.

    Staffordshire Police believe it was started deliberately and is appealing for witnesses.

    Fire crews were called to Wileman Street shortly before 04:30.

  6. Plans over £4m motorway bypass unveiledpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 29 May 2018

    A £4mi project to revitalise a controversial motorway bypass have been unveiled.

    The Western Orbital scheme – known as the Wolverhampton bypass – failed to be approved in the 1990s and 2000s over pollution fears.

    But now a West Midlands Combined Authority report has revealed that Midlands Connect is to use government funding to reignite the scheme.

    The 40-mile highway would cut through countryside at the M5 junction, 4a at Bromsgrove, to junction 2 of the M54.

    Maria Machancoses, Midlands Connect Director, said: "Our Midlands Motorway Hub study recommends undertaking more work to understand the economic and social case for a Western Strategic Route linking the M5 and M6, and is one of a wide range of proposals that requires further analysis."

    Earlier we reported that Paul Hurst was in talks with Ipswich after Shrewsbury Town "reluctantly" gave him permission. Well, the deal has been done - and he's on his way to Suffolk.

    The two clubs have agreed a compensation package for the remaining period of Hurst's contract.

    There's been persistent speculation from before the play-offs that Ipswich were homing in on Hurst.

    Residents in a Worcestershire village are inviting people to buy shares to help fund a new shop.

    Lower Broadheath has been without a village shop for the last 12 months.

    Volunteers are now trying to raise £25,000 to build and open a new shop, with shares starting at £10.

    A man is bringing a city's history back to life.

    Peter James Knight is using computer animation to recreate old buildings and streets in Coventry.

    Peter's planning to release an interactive version of Coventry Rebuilt later this year and says he hopes his films will lead to more of its history being uncovered.

    The 20-year-old remains is a serious but stable condition after being stabbed multiple times in his chest and stomach.

    Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst is to have talks with Ipswich.

    The club has "reluctantly" given Ipswich permission to start discussions with Hurst after agreeing compensation.

    Speculation had been mounting that Ipswich had Hurst in their sights.

    The Championship side has been without a manager since April, but Shrewsbury's involvement in the end-of-season play-offs meant they had to delay taking things any further with Hurst - until now.

    Hurst has been in charge at Shrewsbury since October 2016. They lost Sunday's play-off final to Rotherham - meaning they aren't going up to the Championship.

    The Environment Agency say flood defences which have been put in on a flood plain in Birmingham are working.

    Residents living in Selly Oak have questioned why they've been flooded for the third time in nine years after Sunday's heavy rain.

    The Environment Agency say river defences are now in place but is working with the city council on plans to protect people from flash flooding.

    A smoking lounge in Birmingham has been shutdown after a man was injured in a shooting there at the weekend.

    Shots were fired through the door of the Arabian Nites shisha lounge in Highgate in Birmingham.

    The licence will now have to be reviewed for the venue to reopen.
