    Waste is on fire at a scrap metal recycling plant with the smoke rising high above the area.

    A worker at Whites, in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry, confirmed the fire broke out shortly before 10:00.

    The fire service is at the scene.

  2. John and Yono's acorns and sculpture visit markedpublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    John Lennon and Yoko Ono took a trip to Coventry 50 years ago today.

    Beatle John and his then new partner made the trip in his white Rolls-Royce to submit a piece of art for a sculpture exhibition at the Cathedral.

    Their display included a circular white wrought-iron seat that slotted together to surround two acorns, which would then grow inside the bench. On the seat was a plaque that read: Yoko by John, John by Yoko.

    However, it wasn’t long after John and Yoko’s visit that the acorns and plaque were stolen.

    Yoko Ono returned to the city in 2005 to complete the work by planting two Japanese oak trees in the cathedral's Unity Garden.

    The anniversary is being marked by the Coventry Music Museum which is staging a re-enactment of the event.

    Wolverhampton-born Sam Morsy is likely to start Egypt's opening world cup qualifier on the bench, but his supporters back in the UK will be hoping he makes an appearance at some point.

    They include his former PE teacher at the Thomas Telford school, Iain Sweeney, who described Morsy as a "tenacious bulldog" and a "natural leader".

    Morsy (number five in the photo above) has five caps for his country, after making his debut in 2016 and played for the Wolves academy and for Port Vale.

    He tweeted before the tournament, external to say the chance to play in the World Cup was a "dream come true".

    There will also be interest in West Brom's Ahmed Hegazi and Ahmed Elmohamady of Aston Villa.

    More than £300,000 has been awarded to Stoke-on-Trent City Council to tackle homelessness.

    The government grant is intended to help get rough sleepers off the streets and into accommodation.

    The money will be spent on extra bed spaces and more staff to help the homeless find a place to stay.

    After leaving Atherstone, riders will visit Kenilworth and Warwick town centres before climbing to the highest points in the county, through Wellesbourne, Shipston-on-Stour and Burton Dassett, before ending in Leamington Spa.

    About 95,000 spectators lined the streets to watch last year's race.

    It's the third time Warwickshire has hosted a stage of the race.

    The 17-team event, now in its fifth edition, forms part of the UCI Women's WorldTour , externaland concludes on Sunday.

    The Women's Tour has more than doubled its prize fund this year to match the sums awarded in the men's race, with prize money for the five-day race now standing at 90,000 euro (£80,355).

    The executive principal of an under-performing group of academies in north Warwickshire said she was confident results would improve after making changes to staff and the curriculum.

    Ros McMullen landed the top job at the Midland Academies Trust after disappointing GCSE results at George Eliot School, Nuneaton Academy and Hartshill School saw them languishing near the foot of annual league tables.

    After being in the post for just 18 months, she said things were moving in the right direction and there had been positive feedback following Ofsted inspections in all three schools.

    “Every single inspection we’ve had said that they were expecting results to improve because we were doing all the right things and they could see how things were moving in the right direction," she said.

    A new-look Shrewsbury railway station is being officially opened.

    More than £800,000 has been spent on the renovation which includes new waiting rooms and toilets.

    Network Rail will also reveal their plans to carry out work on the Dana bridge over the railway.

    Seven people have been led to safety by fire crews tackling a blaze involving two cars during the early hours.

    The fire on Washwood Heath Road, Birmingham, is believed to have been started deliberately, West Midlands Fire Service said.

    Crews were called to to the scene shortly before 05:00.

    One person was treated with oxygen for smoke inhalation.

    An inquest into the death of an eight-year-old young boy who died in a house fire is being held today.

    Lucas Carter died shortly after he was rescued from the blaze in Sandbach, Cheshire, in 2016 which was not treated as suspicious.

    His mother Kelly-Anne Carter, 35, suffered serious burns in the fire and killed herself just a few weeks later.

    Her inquest in November heard she couldn't go on without her son.

    The world's top women cyclists will race through Warwickshire today on the third stage of the Tour of Britain.

    A student says he is honoured to be able to attend a service of thanksgiving for Professor Stephen Hawking at Westminster Abbey today.

    The physicist died in March, aged 76, after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

    Jack Smith, 21, from Staffordshire, will be a guest along with two students from the National Star College for people with disabilities.

    Jack, who suffered a brain injury and uses a special communicator, said he's "excited" to have been invited.

    Brad Walker says he has no intention of quitting Crewe Alexandra, despite admitting he found his first year at Gresty Road very difficult.

    The Alex paid a nominal fee to buy the 23-year-old from Hartlepool last summer but he failed to start a game after 3 February.

    Walker told BBC Radio Stoke leaving his home town was tough but he's never considered packing up and going back.

    The festival of Eid al-Fitr and the end of Ramadan is being celebrated today.

    Eid begins with a feast to end the period of fasting, which started almost a month ago.

    It's thought about 150,000 people will take part in festivities at Small Heath Park in Birmingham.
