  1. Calls to honour cave diverspublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    There have been calls to honour the divers who helped rescue 12 school boys and their coach from a flooded cave in Thailand.

    Rick Stanton from Coventry (below left) and John Volanthen from Bristol (below right) were the first to reach the group, nine days after they went missing.

    Former England captain Michael Vaughan was among others to express their admiration on Twitter, external, writing: "Proud of the England Football team .. But that's just sport .. More proud of the 7 British divers that have helped save all those boys lives in Thailand.."

    And Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has also revealed he had discussions with Mr Stanton about the possibility of using his mini-submarine in the rescue.

  2. Body found in Stoke-on-Trent canalpublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A body has been found in the Cauldon canal in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Part of the canal towpath in Hanley Park has been sealed off after the discovery, just before 06:50, close to the bridge which runs under College Road.

    Blood donations in Birmingham have dropped by up to 10% on some days this summer.

    There is a particular need for O negative blood in Birmingham, the health service added.

    A spokesman said the good weather and England's World Cup run may have affected the figures.

    Nationally, donations have significantly dropped on England’s match days by as much as 20%.

    A preferred route has been chosen for Hereford's new £129m Western bypass.

    The red route was chosen from a colour-coded shortlist of seven. Five homes will have to be demolished to make way for it.

    Herefordshire Council says the bypass will divert traffic out of the city and open up land for new homes and businesses to be built.

    Opponents say it won't alleviate traffic and will destroy valuable farmland, the county's wildlife and the River Wye corridor.

    And all lines are blocked between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General due to an incident.

    The New Saints are all but eliminated from the European Champions League after a 5-0 away defeat at Macedonian team Shkendija.

    Besart Ibraimi scored four goals, leaving the Oswestry-based side with a mountain to climb in the home leg next week.

  10. Man hit with spade in road rage incidentpublished at 07:57 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A man hit over the head with a spade in a road rage incident "narrowly escaped life threatening injuries," police said.

    The 21-year-old was was involved in an argument with four men in an Astra on Victoria Street in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, on Saturday afternoon.

    West Midlands Police said he is still in hospital, undergoing treatment for serious injuries.

    "From our initial enquiries we know there was a large build-up of traffic on Victoria Street when this happened.

    "I’d like to ask anyone who drove past the incident to come forward if they haven’t done so already," a spokesman said.

    The glue company Bostik is planning to close its sealant department in Stafford.

    It says it has decided to consolidate the European manufacturing of certain products.

    The Common Road based business says it could affect 32 jobs and is asking for volunteers for redundancy.

    The number of car-parking spaces being offered at Worcestershire's new railway station could be doubled or even trebled, if there's overwhelming demand for them.

    Worcestershire Parkway, near Norton, will initially accommodate 500 spaces, but Worcestershire councillor Ken Pollock said it should be easy to add a second deck if necessary.

    The authority says building work should be complete early in 2019 and that the first trains could be stopping there by the time the May timetables are published.

  14. Steam locomotives suspended over fire riskpublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    The Severn Valley Railway has stopped running steam locomotives to reduce the risk of starting fires.

    It took the precaution after the fire service was called out on Sunday to attend a number of small blazes which broke out along the line.

  15. Points failure causing rail delayspublished at 07:10 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A points failure between Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway is disrupting trains running between Birmingham New Street and Leicester, external, the National Rail website reports.

    Trains are currently unable to run from Nuneaton towards Birmingham New Street and will be delayed or cancelled.

    It's hoped the problem will be fixed later this morning.
