  2. Crash dead dad 'will remain in our hearts forever'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 16 July 2018

    The family of a man killed when his van was involved in a crash with a lorry in Warwickshire said they had been left "shattered" by his death.

    Karamjit Singh, 37, from Leicester died in hospital after the crash on Siskin Parkway East, Baginton, at about 22:50 on Tuesday 10 July.

    His 11-year-old son, Aarondeep, said: "No one can replace my dad and he will remain in our hearts forever."

    Sonia, his wife said she would now be "left with his memories which shall stay alive in my heart forever".

    Officers are continuing to investigate the crash.

    A man has been charged with the murder of an 86-year-old grandmother in her Birmingham homne.

    Madni Ahmed, 20, from Cavendish Street, Stoke-on-Trent, is accused of attacking Riasat Bi in Aubrey Road, Small Heath.

    West Midlands Police say, external Ms Bi died from multiple stab wounds.

    Mr Ahmed is also charged with attempted murder after an 18-year-old man was attacked at the same address and a third count of affray.

    The 18-year-old remains in a critical condition in hospital.

    Mr Ahmed will appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

    The issue of knife crime has been brought up in the Commons as an MP paid tribute to an 86-year-old grandmother who died after being stabbed.

    Riasat Bi was found stabbed in Aubrey Road, Small Heath, last Thursday.

    Home Secretary Sajid Javid acknowledged that there was complex issues around knife crime and will be working closely with West Midlands Police to see what more they can do to aid the force.

  5. Fire crews busy with grass firespublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 16 July 2018

    A grass fire has broken out on farmland near Rugeley.

    A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Fire Service said five crews are tending to the fire in Wolseley near Bower Lane. About 800 square metres of grassland is well alight.

    The fire service said it's dealt with a number of phone calls throughout the day alerting them to grass fires.

    Earlier, crews went to another grass fire in the Cannock area which is thought to have been started deliberately. The fire is now under control.

    Shoppers in Worcester were feeling slightly stumped after a cricket pitch was set up in the city centre. The competition involving 18 teams was organised by the charity Street Sixes which raises cash to help children from underprivileged backgrounds to play the game.

    Plans to build a new shopping and leisure scheme in Stoke-on-Trent have been scrapped - with developers blaming problems in retail and the uncertainity of Brexit.

    Unity Walk was set to go on the site of the old bus station and east west centre in Hanley.

    Two people have been seriously injured as a car they were travelling in was involved in a crash with an HGV.

    A 21-year-old man from Middlewich and 19-year-old woman from Crewe were passengers in the car traveling along Nantwich Road in Wimboldsley near Middlewich.

    The pair had to be cut free from the vehicle and and were taken to Royal Stoke Hospital in the early hours of yesterday.

    The drivers of both the lorry and the car were uninjured.

    Hundreds of fish could have died in the Stourport canal in Worcestershire, the Environment Agency says.

    It's believed a build-up of pollutants after the recent dry spell was washed into the water during this weekend's heavy rain, causing oxygen levels to drop.

    Work was still ongoing to increase the river flow, said Dave Throup, from the Environment Agency.

    Staff are also continuing to rescue fish from the River Teme in north Herefordshire.

    Officers are investigating the aggravated burglary which happened at about 00:45 this morning in Webster Avenue, Kenilworth.

    The man, in his 20s, was threatened and attacked after four or five suspects forced entry, Warwickshire Police said.

    The suspects demanded money, before making off with the victim's wallet and car.

    Organisers of a taxi demonstration in Wolverhampton today said fewer drivers turned out to protest than expected.

    Drivers say too many licences are being issued by the council, outstripping demand for their services from passengers.

    The council said the protest should be held in "Westminster not Wolverhampton" as the argument is with the government for changing the rules over taxi licences.
