    Police have been called in by Cheshire East Council to look into the way the authority bought and sold land in the past.

    It’s in addition to five other investigations into the council that have been launched over the last three years, including one looking into separate allegations over land transactions.

    The authority says it’s brought in police after “a targeted forensic audit”, but won’t release any further details.

    Crews have responded to an electrical fire in student accommodation.

    Canley Fire Station tweeted, external: "Fantastic response from occupants. Immediately left the property and called 999."

    It added they arrived to the house near Fletchamstead Highway in Coventry within five minutes and were able to "save" the property.

  5. Plans for supermarket are revisedpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    Plans for a new Morrisons store in Oswestry have been altered, after concerns were raised by the Environment Agency and the civic society.

    The changes include some plant rooms being scaled back and a LPG store being scrapped, but the mezzanine floor will now be bigger and alterations have been made to plans for the entrance canopy.

    Planning permission was granted for a leisure complex on Shrewsbury Road in 2011, but that never happened.

    The supermarket chain says if this application is approved, other companies may become interested in the former livestock market site.

    A decision is expected from Shropshire Council by October 15.

    Port Vale manager Neil Aspin has praised young defender Nathan Smith, saying he was "excellent" in their win over Crewe.

    Smith recently returned to the starting line-up and Vale have only conceded twice in those four games.

    Aspin said Smith "got a little bit overshadowed" by other players, but "he battled and he scrapped and he fought for headers".

  7. 'Single shot' used on man in dawn raidspublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    A man was shot by armed officers during a dawn raid that led to six people being arrested.

    Initial investigations by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) indicates that a single shot was fired by an officer taking part in a pre-planned operation, searching for a man wanted in connection with a firearms offence.

    The man in his 30s was taken to the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital - his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

    IOPC Regional Director for the West Midlands, Derrick Campbell, said: "This is a serious incident and as is appropriate when police use potentially lethal force we will be carrying out a thorough, independent investigation.

    "We will be making contact with the family of the man who was shot and they will be regularly updated on our investigation’s progress."

    Out-of date-food, greasy surfaces and sauce bottles encrusted with food has led to a Chinese takeaway boss being disqualified from running a food business, Telford and Wrekin Council has said.

    Inspectors said China Star City, in King Street, Dawley, "posed a significant risk to health".

    Telford magistrates yesterday fined the company £960 and ordered it to pay a £96 victim surcharge after the owner admitted five breaches of food hygiene regulations.

    The inspectors said they also found raw beef next to cooked chicken and open food containers stacked on top of each other.

    The council said China Star City director Ka-Fai Woo was given an indefinite ban and cannot apply to have it lifted for at least six months.

    The RSPCA says the deaths of two cats in Shrewsbury, within the space of a few days, could have been caused deliberately.

    The charity said they both appeared to have died after coming into contact with anti-freeze, but it is possible they came across the chemicals by accident.

    Cat owners are being urged to keep a close eye on their animals and people with anti-freeze are being asked to store it carefully.

    UKIP leader Gerard Batten has told the West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge to "do the decent and honourable thing" and step down from his European seat.

    Mr Etheridge quit the party earlier today, criticising the party leader and complaining UKIP had become seen as "a vehicle for hate towards Muslims and the Gay community".

    Mr Batten said party members were "fully behind" his leadership and that Mr Etheridge's seat "morally belongs" to UKIP.

  13. End of horse fair 'part of attack on traveller community'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    The ending of the Kenilworth Horse Fair is "part of ongoing moves to basically take away the traditions of the Gypsy and traveller community,” the chairman of the Gypsy and Traveller Coalition has said.

    Phien O'Reachtagian also said he was “not suprised” at the news, as restrictions were being put on traveller events and their way of life across the country.

    Mr O'Reachtagian also blamed media reports and social media and added: "We fear there seems to be a campaign to make life for Gypsies and travellers unbearable - so that we go into hiding like we did in the 16th Century.”

    Warwick District Council announced it was ending the horse fair event, which has been held three times a year since 2001.

    Council leader Andrew Mobbs said after many years of problems he was pleased for the people of Kenilworth that the event would no longer take place, external.

    Draycote Water near Rugby has been praised by national tourism body Visit England, external for the quality of its family-friendly facilities.

    The reservoir which is owned and operated by Severn Trent was highlighted for having great visitor information and cleanliness at the reservoir and country park.

  17. Bill Etheridge MEP resigns from UKIPpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge has resigned from UKIP, citing differences between himself and leader, Gerard Batten.

    "The party is now seen by large swathes of the British public as a vehicle for hate towards Muslims and the Gay community," Mr Etheridge told Mr Batten by letter.

    He went on: "The changes you have made since becoming leader have changed the party beyond all recognition."

    Mr Etheridge ended the correspondence by saying he had quit with "great sadness".

    He is set to continue sitting as an MEP within the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) group, , externalof which Nigel Farage is president.

    Mr Batten said: "I hope that Mr Etheridge will do the decent and honourable thing and resign his seat, thereby handing it back to UKIP to which it morally belongs."

    People are being asked to name and shame drivers who park dangerously outside schools.

    West Mercia Police want residents in Bromsgrove, Rubery, Alvechurch, Wythall and Hagley to send them pictures of any vehicles they see parked in a way which could pose a risk to children, vulnerable people or other road users.
