    A company behind plans to create more than 60 holiday cabins in Mortimer Forest in Herefordshire says it's pulled the scheme, due to some "challenging practical issues".

    Forest Holidays says it's no longer in a position to bring forward a planning application for the holiday lets.

    The Forestry Commission says it respects the company's decision, but says without the cabin site and money it would have brought in, it can no longer go ahead with planned improvements to the woodland area.

  2. Two arrests and Class A drugs seizedpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    Two people have been arrested in the Battlefield area of Shrewsbury on suspicion of on drug dealing.

    West Mercia Police said the 38-year-old woman and 39-year-old man are believed to be from the Merseyside area.

    A large quantity of Class A drugs were seized and police believe they've disrupted a so-called county lines operation, which involve drug dealers from cities selling their products in smaller towns.

    Police say a motorcyclist killed in a crash in Hereford on Sunday morning was a local man in his 30s.

    His blue Kawasaki bike hit a parked car on Ryelands Street just before 06:00 and he was pronounced dead at Hereford Hospital.

    West Mercia Police say the man's next-of-kin have been informed, but haven't released his name.

  4. Passengers stranded after Primera Air collapsepublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    The collapse of Primera Air has left passengers stranded and many others forced to pay for expensive alternative tickets.

    Sam Hyde, from Oxford, flew with his wife for an anniversary trip to Malaga from Birmingham last week with RyanAir and was due to fly back with Primera Air on 5 October. The flights cost £140 per person.

    He told the Press Association he has not received any information from Primera Air about the cancellation, and found out the company had gone bust after he received a text message from his father-in-law.

    The 48-year-old said he felt worse for the firm's employees who lost their jobs.

    "At least we're stranded somewhere sunny but we'll have to find another flight ourselves in the meantime, which might be difficult given there will be lots of people stranded too.

    "We'd never heard of the airline before - I guess that should have been a warning."

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has said it is investigating after a man was shot by police during dawn raids in Edgbaston, Birmingham, earlier.

    A spokesman said: "The incident happened at around 05:00 at a property in Shepherds Gardens during a pre-planned police operation."

    The spokesman added that IOPC investigators have been deployed to the scene and police post-incident procedures are in place.

    You can imagine that was how goalkeeper Lee Burge had to break the news to Coventry City manager Mark Robins.

    The 25-year-old was hit with a stray shot during Coventry Blaze's match with Sheffield Steelers on Sunday.

    Burge trained with a bandaged head on Monday and will be assessed before tonight's League One game with Portsmouth at the Ricoh Arena.

  10. Fears of hazardous chemical at propertypublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    Firefighters were called to investigate fears of a dangerous chemical at a house where a Stoke-on-Trent woman died.

    The woman's body was discovered at the property on Glebedale Road yesterday afternoon and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed the chemical was turpentine-based.

  11. Work at historic railway station is on trackpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    The £2.5m renovation of the Severn Valley Railway's Bridgnorth station has moved to its second phase, after the building of a new refreshment block.

    Some work still needs to be finished inside the new building but development has now started on the car park and access roads.

    The railway said it hasn't got a set timetable, but is aiming to have the new block open by the end of the year.

    Work to build a turntable for the locomotives and to renovate the original station building will take place next year.

  13. Mylee Billingham: Father driven by 'jealousy and anger'published at 12:30 British Summer Time 2 October 2018

    William Billingham stared at the floor and shook his head as he was sentenced to a minimum of 27 years for killing his eight-year-old daughter Mylee.

    Passing sentence at Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Paul Farrer QC said: "This offence was driven by jealousy and anger.

    "You turned that anger upon Mylee and killed her in order to cause pain to her mother.

    "As such, this was an act of revenge. Alternately, this was the brutal, cowardly, killing of a defenceless and much-loved child who had her whole life ahead of her."

    Billingham, from Brownhills, will serve at least 27 years for killing his daughter.

    A photograph of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai will be unveiled at Birmingham Museums.

    The picture is part of 50 portraits from a new collection by the National Portrait Gallery which will go to places across the UK they are closely associated with.

    Iranian-born artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat took the photograph which shows the 21-year-old seated at a school desk with an open book.

    Yousafzai was shot in 2012 by Taliban militants who tried to kill her for promoting girls' education.

    She was treated in hospital in Birmingham after the shooting and then went to school in the city.

    William Billingham, 55, has been sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum of 27 years.

    He used a kitchen knife to kill his eight-year-old daughter Mylee at his Brownhills home in January.

    A body recovered from the River Severn in Worcester on Friday is that of missing 18-year-old Thomas Jones, West Mercia Police have confirmed.

    The death is being treated as unexplained and a post mortem examination is being carried out.

    The force said specially trained officers are supporting his family.

    The University of Worcester student vanished after a night out in the city on Wednesday, 19 September.

    The discount retailer B&M could have plans for a new store in Stone turned down, because of it's brightly-coloured signs.

    Member's of Stafford Borough Council's planning committee said it was out of keeping with the rest of the town.

    One councillor called it "over the top" for the high street.

    A decision on the application to convert the former Co-op store on High Street has yet to be made and B&M has been asked to revise its plans.

    But a statement with the company's application said: "There would be no significant harm caused by the proposed development and it would accord with the previous signage arrangement from previous occupiers."
