Forensic specialists continue to search a Sutton Coldfield property, previously owned by the mother of Suzy Lamplugh murder suspect, John Cannan.

David Wilson, from Birmingham City University, said it would be difficult to tell if there will be usable DNA evidence that police would be able to use.

"If the police are still willing to pursue some of the leads that hadn't been pursued in the past, or new information comes forward or new opportunities come forward, then there may be the possibility of solving these historic mysteries."

    • A blue tent has been erected over where the garage stood to the rear of the home.
    • What sounded like an angle grinder has been used to cut through concrete, with dust seen billowing over the area.
    • It's not the first time police have been at the home, with officers visiting the garden over several months in 2002.

It's not the first time he has taken this stand - last year the former West Brom player told the Baggies match day programme: "It stands for all the conflicts that Britain has been involved in. Because of the history where I come from in Derry, I cannot wear something that represents that."

The club said it was proud of its "close connections" with the armed services, but, "we recognise that the Poppy means different things to different individuals and communities and (like the Royal British Legion) do not believe that anybody should be forced or even pressured to wear the Poppy against their free will."

    Quote Message

I know many people won’t agree with my decision or even attempt to gain an understanding of why I don’t wear a poppy. I accept that but I would ask people to be respectful of the choice I have made, just as I’m respectful of people who do choose to wear a poppy.”

Steve Eling, leader of the Labour-run Sandwell Council said: "We have no intention of having costly schemes imposed on us by the Metro Mayor."

He cast doubt on its effectiveness, adding; "Road charges would not work for much of the traffic-related pollution in Sandwell anyway, because much of it comes from the motorways, over which the council has no control.”

Government approval for Birmingham's clean air zone is expected later and it could come into force in January 2020.
