    A hearing involving three Shropshire midwives is starting in London today, in connection with a wider review of baby deaths in the county.

    Kerry Davies, Hayley Lacey and Laura Jones are in front of a disciplinary panel run by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

    They work for the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, where maternity care is being investigated by an independent review, ordered last year by the government.

    The trio are accused of misconduct but the details of the charges won't be given until the main hearing starts.

    A University of Birmingham professor says the key ask from today's budget is about infrastructure.

    "There's fears about phase two," he said.

    "It's absolutely critical - you’ve got to trigger the catalyst around the transport hubs for regional growth beyond and above Birmingham."

    Phase 1 of HS2 is the line between London and Birmingham which is due to open in 2026, with phase 2 going on to Leeds and Manchester.

    Chancellor Philip Hammond is preparing to present the last budget before Brexit.

    Gregory Irvin, 26, of Hill Park, Walsall Wood, cut Anne James' throat during the brutal knife attack at her home in Walsall on 28 February.

    At a Birmingham Crown Court hearing today he was told he would service a minimum of 24 years in custody.

    The Wildlife Trust of Birmingham and the Black Country says it worked with volunteers in Stourbridge yesterday on a 50m (55 yards) section of the waterway.

    The impact on the river's flow was "instantly noticeable", the group said.

    An angle grinder and sledghammer were used by robbers who forced their way into a jewellers in Nuneaton on Saturday.

    The men fled with watches after the incident at H Johnson and Son in Queen's Road, said Warwickshire Police.

    The three men had previously driven a blue Volkswagen Golf across the pavement, reversing it to the shop, at about 09:40.

    Officers are keen to speak to any witnesses.

    West Midlands Fire Service are to be honoured with the Emergency Services Award at the Pride of Britain Awards tonight.

    Crews saved the life of driver Phil Ewins, who had been impaled on a pole in a crash.

    The driver was on the way to propose to his girlfriend when he crashed. He has since celebrated his wedding with the team that saved him.

    Expert divers, including Richard Stanton from Coventry, who risked their lives to rescue 12 Thai footballers, will also be honoured at the ceremony.

    He was one of the first divers to reach the group who had been trapped in a flooded cave for nine days.

    The DVLA can ban people who have that number of penalty points on a licence but many people are avoiding bans through an "exceptional hardship" scheme, according to road charity Brake.

    Lives are being put at risk, it said.

    A 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were found dead inside, police say.

    The area's still cordoned off as the cause of the fire's now being investigated.
