    Demolition work is under way at a derelict shopping centre which Stoke-on-Trent City Council said was "holding back" the area.

    In September, the local authority announced it planned to spend £4m buying and knocking down the East-West precinct in Hanley.

    The defender admitted he thought about leaving after the club's relegation to the Championship, but insists he never tried to force a move away.

    Police are hunting a man who attacked a 72-year-old woman as she took money out at Morrisons in Crewe.

    She was using the cash machine at the Dunwoody Way store on Friday afternoon when her arm was twisted and cash taken.

    Cheshire Police says the man, who got away on a bike, had started to chat about the weather before robbing her.

    Happy Mondays and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers have been announced among the headline acts for next year's Lakefest festival.

    The event at Eastnor Castle, near Ledbury, takes place on the second weekend of August and the first tickets go on sale tonight.

    The initial findings of a report into the flooding in Solihull in May will be discussed by councillors next week, with the full report due in January.

    Parts of the West Midlands saw more than a month's rainfall in just an hour on 27 May and more than 300 properties were flooded in Solihull.

    At the time, many homeowners called for measures to combat flash flooding in the future and have since called for closer scrutiny of new housing developments.

    Solihull Council launched an investigation into the problems experienced at 11 sites around the borough and the measures which may prevent similar issues in future.

    The findings, which were previously presented to a council scrutiny meeting a few weeks ago, form part of the latest flood plan for the area.

    A travel agent who conned clients out of more than £250,000 - including one from Warwickshire - has been jailed.

    Liverpool Crown Court heard Rita Hunter "brazenly" took some of the money while she had a suspended prison term hanging over her for similar frauds.

    She has left a trail of 13 "devastated" customers with "no explanation" about where the money went, the court heard.

    Hunter, 63, from Liverpool, was jailed for four years and eight months.

    Police say they couldn't believe it when they stopped this car in Stoke-on-Trent with a badly smashed windscreen.

    The Central Motorway Police Group said the driver of the car said "he didn’t think it was too much of a problem".

    The car has been ordered off the road until the windscreen is fixed and police said the driver had been reported.

  8. Hospital writes to ex patients after superbug discoverypublished at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2018

    Worcestershire Royal Hospital says it's written to some former patients about a super bug known as KPC, to advise them that they may want to be screened.

    It follows an outbreak in the hospital which saw 24 patients affected.

    The hospital says the bacteria normally lives harmlessly in the gut, but it can lead to an infection, which can have serious implications.

    The Worcestershire Royal has also been found to have poor hygiene inspection controls, with inspectors raising the danger level to "red".

    Staff at the University of Birmingham are to meet today to discuss its response to the jailing of British academic Matthew Hedges, accused of spying in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

    In a statement, external the University and College Union (UCU) at the site said it was "especially troubled" by the verdict because the university is in the process of opening a new campus in the UAE.

    The university officially opened the Dubai International Academic City site, external in February 2018 with the first cohort of students welcomed in September.

    "We, along with other staff, students and our local MP, have consistently raised serious safety concerns about the Dubai project," said the UCU committee.

    "To date, management have been unable to provide clear assurances over how they would protect the safety of staff and students."

    The University of Birmingham has been approached for a response.

    The planned Clean Air Zone in Birmingham would "decimate the black cab trade in the city" a union representing taxi drivers has warned.

    According to city council figures, only 72 of the 1,265 Hackney Carriages licensed to operate in the city will be compliant with the emission standards being imposed by the pollution charge from January 2020.

    Representatives of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union said there "won’t be a Hackney Carriage trade left" unless drivers were supported.

    The authority said it was making a multimillion-pound bid to the government's Clean Air Fund to buy 50 ultra low emission vehicles, and offer grants to drivers who want to convert to LPG or use a low-emission vehicle.

  12. 'Groundbreaking' electric motorcycle launchedpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2018

    What claims to be the "world's most advanced electric motorcycle" has been launched by Coventry-based company Arc Vehicles.

    The company won funding, including the backing of Jaguar Land Rover, to develop its electric Vector model, which can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds.

    The £90,000 bike comes with a helmet featuring a heads-up display, incorporating a speedometer, sat-nav and other features, as well as a rear-view camera.

    Meanwhile a high-tech jacket uses vibrations to either alert the rider of various hazards, or even supplement the music system.

    Some commentators have likened the equipment to Marvel's Iron Man.

    The bike is on display at the Motorcycle Live show currently at the NEC in Birmingham.

    Managerless Shrewsbury Town eased past high-flying National League side Salford City in their FA Cup first round replay.

    Fejiri Okenabirhie put the dominant League One side ahead as he converted from close range after Luke Waterfall's header from a corner hit the post.

    Josh Laurent hit the upright soon after, but Greg Docherty made no mistake after the break as he blasted in from a tight angle after a fine run past two Salford defenders.

    Councillors in Telford and Wrekin are to call for a vote of no confidence in the management of Shropshire's two main hospitals.

    The Conservative group will put forward the motion at today's full council meeting.

    Councillors on the local authority backed a similar no confidence vote in July 2017.

    Since then, Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust (SaTH), which runs the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals, has been put into special measures and is also the focus of a government-initiated inquiry into the number of baby deaths.

    Earlier this month SaTH's chief executive Simon Wright said special measures would cause "anxiety among our patients and staff", but added: "We absolutely welcome that extra support that comes with special measures and NHS Improvement's support for the trust's leadership to make the necessary improvements."

    Hundreds of people gathered last night for the official unveiling of a memorial to remember the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings.

    Three steel trees were unveiled outside New Street Station exactly 44 years after the attack on 21 November, 1974.

    A minute's silence was held around the sculpture as it was officially unveiled at 20:17, the time the first bomb was detonated.

    Campaign group Justice4the21 said the unveiling was a "multi-faith event" as the "bombs didn't discriminate and neither do we".

    Julie Hambleton, whose 18-year-old sister Maxine was killed in the bombings, said: "We are just overwhelmed with what has been produced for the memory of our loved ones."

    Plans for a £7.5m transformation of Coventry's St Mary's Guildhall are going to be explored by the city council.

    The building, parts of which date back almost 700 years, is costing the local authority between £150,000 to £200,000 a year after income.

    The council plans to turn it into a "high quality hospitality and events venue" which it estimates could generate an income of £1m to £1.3m per year.

    Council officers say the transformation would be sensitively managed and would include creating a new bar and lounge area, a new kitchen and back of house.

    The council also wants to open up the Medieval kitchen,which is one of only five remaining intact in the UK.
