    The House of Fraser department store in Shrewsbury is closing this weekend.

    Retail at the site - previously known as Rackhams and before that, Della Portas - can trace its history in the town back 150 years.

    The chain, which was bought by Sports Direct after its collapse in the summer, has kept a number of its stores open but was unable to find a way to keep Shrewsbury's going.

    A man was left with "serious injuries" in a two-car crash which resulted in one vehicle hitting a tree.

    He was discovered lying near a bush and a damaged car, the ambulance service said.

    He was treated for multiple injuries following the incident on the A5 in Churchover, Rugby, at about 23:25 yesterday.

    A further three patients were assessed at the scene, but all suffered only minor injuries.

    The West Midlands force said armed officers patrolling in the Chuckery area spotted a car suspected of being linked to drug-dealing but when they attempted to stop it, the vehicle sped off before being abandoned.

    A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby, along with a 16-year-old boy - both on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply.

    The man is also being questioned on suspicion of failing to stop for police.

    The Canal and River Trust has begun to pump water into a section of the restored Montgomery Canal near Oswestry.

    It is filling the 500m stretch between the B4396 and Pryces Bridge and checking it hasn't got any leaks as it goes.

    The work has been carried out by Shropshire Union Canal volunteers and is part of a multi million-pound restoration effort.

    An elderly Bromsgrove couple is looking for help to get back wedding rings after they were stolen last month.

    Thieves broke into the pair's house on Santridge Lane on 13 December and took jewellery including a 22 carat solitaire engagement ring, a white gold eternity ring set with seven diamonds and a wedding band.

    Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is working on a review of its polling stations and polling districts to deal with changes in the population, and at a meeting last night, councillors agreed action was needed.

    A man from Leicester has been jailed for eight months after being caught with 1.2m illegal cigarettes.

    HM Revenue and Customs say they caught Altaf Umarji, 47, and three others, with the cache of tobacco in January 2014 in Talke, Staffordshire.

    Umarji, of Gwendolen Road, Leicester, was sentenced to eight months in prison at Stoke Crown Court yesterday, having pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of excise duty.

    The three other men had also pleaded guilty to the same offence and were sentenced yesterday.

    A man arrested after a lorry was stopped on the M6 with 27 suspected migrants in the back has been released while investigations continue.

    Staffordshire Police arrested the man, a lorry driver aged 42, on suspicion of "facilitating the illegal entry" of people into the UK.

    The Home Office said the 27 people, including four who claim to be under 18, were comprised of Eritrean, Ethiopian and Sudanese nationals.

    Part of the motorway was closed on Wednesday as police searched vehicles near Keele services, causing lengthy tailbacks.

    The ambulance service said the 37-year-old suffered a serious head injury in the collision on Collector Road, close to the junction of Lanchester Way, at about 08:25.

    A man in the other car was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to hospital.

    Two men, aged 42 and 25, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
