Recorded firearms offences 'nearly triple'published at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2019
The number of firearms offences recorded by West Mercia Police has almost tripled since 2013, official figures show.
There were 56 recorded offences in 2012-13, according to Home Office statistics, but that increased to 142 last year.
It comes as senior police leaders in England and Wales say a rise in gun crime and a looming recruitment shortfall are leaving some specialist armed officers "stretched".
In 2015, the government set aside funds for 1,500 new armed officers by 2020 - but there's been only 812.
A police staff association leader said he had "great concern" the risk to the public could be increased.
The Home Office says it's given £144m for armed policing and individual forces are in charge of recruiting and training officers.
