  1. Stuck husky freed by fire crewpublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 2 September 2019

    A husky had to be rescued by firefighters after getting its head stuck in a garden gate.

    Eight-year-old Millie had run at the gate, which separates two sections of the garden at her house in Brunswick Park Road in Wednesbury, at about 08:30 on Sunday, said owner Adam Ford.

    He said he tried to pull her free but, when he couldn’t, called the emergency services.

    “If she had moved her head any higher, she would have choked herself,” he said.

    Crews from Walsall Fire Station arrived and were able to free her using hydraulic spreaders before attempting to close up the hole in the gate.

    “She was very scared and got more and more anxious when we were all clomping round in our big boots,” said crew commander Chris Hand.

    “But she was quickly freed and then she was bouncing around and even sat nicely for a photo.”

    The service has been launched in 50 car parks and 55 on-street bays from today.

    The PayByPhone app allows people to pay for their parking using their mobile devices.

    Traditional parking ticket machines that accept coins are not being removed, the council said, and added the new system would not affect anyone who already pays for a monthly or annual parking permit.

  3. Aston Villa: 'Poor' refereeing as goal disallowedpublished at 08:23 British Summer Time 2 September 2019

    Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith says VAR "is meant to" correct mistakes, after what he called a "good goal" was disallowed.

    Henri Lansbury scored late on, but referee Kevin Friend booked Jack Grealish for simulation in the build-up, as Villa lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace.

    Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeted, external: "The disallowed goal for @AVFCOfficial in the last minute has to be seen to be believed. Why VAR didn't correct what appeared to be an awful refereeing error is beyond me."

    Villa manager Dean Smith admitted he was bemused by the decision to deny his side a point, but accepted they would "take it on the chin".

    Permanent residences have now been found for 30 of the 150 residents who lost their homes in a fire at a retirement complex.

    The apartments at Beechmere, Crewe, were destroyed in a blaze which swept through the building on 8 August.

    Cheshire East Council said its focus continued to be finding permanent homes for those who lost them in the fire and ensuring their care needs are met.

    The company behind the complex said it intended to rebuild it.

    Officers are continuing to investigate the death of a 29-year-old man killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash.

    Rajesh Chand was pronounced dead after being found with serious head injuries on Soho Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, early on Saturday.

    West Midlands Police said he was struck by a car which failed to stop.

    The force said a 30-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Hundreds of hospital patients and staff in Worcestershire have been warned they could have come into contact with a healthcare worker with tuberculosis.

    Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has written to 349 patients and 129 members of staff who were at the Worcestershire Royal at the same time as the infected employee.

    The risk of anyone developing TB is low, the trust says.

    A road remains closed after huge cracks appeared and a pavement outside homes began to sag.

    Tenants in one property on Boatman Drive in Etruria had to leave, with repairs impossible until the ground was stabilised by Redrow Homes, Stoke-on-Trent City Council said.

    Redrow Homes said it was "aware of reports of subsidence" and was "working with the local authority to establish the root cause of any potential issue".

  8. Buses diverted for Metro workspublished at 07:20 British Summer Time 2 September 2019

    Part of Broad Street in Birmingham is closed to vehicles from today for work to take place on the West Midlands Metro extension.

    There will be changes to some bus services travelling into the city centre.
