    A man in his 40s has been arrested after a woman's body was discovered at a property in Stoke-on-Trent yesterday.

    Staffordshire Police said it was called to Meere Close at about 12:50. The death of the woman, in her 40s, is being treated as unexplained.

    The man - arrested on suspicion of murder - has been released on bail while inquiries continue.

  4. Boy accused of terror offences appears in courtpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

    A 16-year-old has appeared in court charged with terrorism offences.

    The boy, from Rugby, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism, and is also charged with six counts of collecting terrorism information.

    The suspected offences are allegedly linked to extreme right wing activity.

    At Westminster Magistrates Court in London earlier, he was remanded into custody at a youth detention centre, for a crown court appearance at the Old Bailey set for 4 October.

    Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell is on a shortlist of four for the League Two manager of the month award.

    He won four out of six games in August and victory over Cambridge on Saturday will see the club make its best start to a league season since the 1940s.

    There's to be a series of exhibitions and events celebrating Birmingham's role in the metal music genre.

    Academics, industry professionals and fans from across the world are expected at the two-day Home of Metal Symposium and Workshop, external held at Birmingham City University's Parkside building from Friday 13 September.

    An exhibition featuring portraits of Back Sabbath fans , externalfrom across the world is also on view at the site until 30 September.

    A £1.2m scheme to restore a memorial hall in Shropshire is on track to finish before Christmas, the town council says.

    The Grade II-listed Anstice Memorial Institute in Madeley, Telford, opened in 1868 as a working men's club but closed in 2014 due to crumbling brickwork.

    The building was bought by Madeley Town Council and the renovation aims to bring the building back into full use for the whole community.

    The local authority says the work is on track and on budget and, if it does finish in mid-December, events will start being hosted in the new year.

    A Shropshire beer has won the overall prize at the International Beer Challenge Awards, external in London.

    Paper Planes, an IPA created by the Salopian Brewery in Hadnall, was one of 67 gold award winners which went - wait for it - head-to-head.

    Beers from all over the world were judged in the competition, which has been running for 23 years.

    Paper Planes, according to judges, has "mellow bitterness" and descends into an "effervescent finish".

  10. Manhunt under way after woman's 'sex hostage' ordealpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

    Police say they are hunting a sex trafficker who held a pregnant woman hostage as part of his plan to force her into prostitution.

    Robert Enescu skipped bail on the eve of a crown court trial, although in his absence at Warwick Crown Court on Monday, he was convicted of facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation and sentenced to nine years in prison.

    Police said Robert Enescu, 26, held his victim captive for two days in squalid conditions at an address in Coventry, making her pose in lingerie for an adult contact site.

    Officers rescued her from a taxi booked to take her to a brothel, the West Midlands force said, after receiving a phone call from a concerned driver.

    She was trafficked from Romania, Enescu's homeland, police added.

  11. Footbridge shortlisted for design awardpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

    Telford's new footbridge has been shortlisted for a global award organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers.

    It's one of 10 projects from around the world to be shortlisted for the People's Choice Award and faces competition from projects in New York and Hong Kong.

    A police campaign to get the public to prepare a "grab-and-go" bag in case of emergencies has been accused of scaremongering and mocked on social media - but for some, they are a sensible precaution.

    For Esme Higgs, from Warwickshire, it is "common sense" to keep a "grab bag" when UK households are at risk from fires, floods or gas leaks.

    "It is far better to leave knowing you will be prepared for a short absence, and able to prove your identity [and] contact insurance companies," she says.

    She and her family keep separate bags full of toiletries, spare clothes, and medical supplies in their bedrooms. She also keeps sanitary towels and a sewing kit in hers.

    She thinks the criticism of the police campaign is "undeserved".

    She said: "You wouldn't criticise the police for advising you to lock your car or keep your wallet safe, or for helping you to evacuate if one of these scenarios occurred."

  13. Man arrested after shots heardpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

    A man has been arrested after shots were heard coming from a Coventry house.

    Armed officers were sent to Grange Road Coventry just after 14:30 on Monday.

    A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene and an air rifle recovered from the property, said West Midlands Police.

    Nobody was injured.

    He says it's vital they are able to defend themselves if faced with the threat of an attack.

    The former post office in Wolverhampton is to be bought by the council as part of its city centre regeneration plans.

    It said it would exercise its Compulsory Purchase Order powers on the owner of the building, which has been unused for several years.

    Wolverhampton Grand Theatre hopes to expand its premises on to the site for theatre, education and hospitality uses.
