  14. MPs welcome speaker John Bercow's departurepublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

John Bercow has announced this afternoon he will stand down as Commons Speaker and MP at the next election or on 31 October, whichever comes first.

The news has prompted tributes from MPs across the Commons, but Mr Bercow has also faced fierce criticism from the front benches and from Brexiteers, who have questioned his impartiality on the issue of Europe.

Speaking this afternoon, Conservative MP for the Wrekin Mark Pritchard said: "For every good decision Bercow made - he undid with multiple bad decisions. He was a reforming speaker but went too far in believing his office was superior to the executive, which it is not."

Fellow Tory, Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, described Mr Bercow as "a man who has abused the highest office in Commons to engineer the destruction of Brexit with Labour and Lib Dems". He added that the speaker had "damaged his office terribly".

Ludlow Conservative MP Philip Dunne said: "John Bercow has been a powerful advocate for backbenchers in Parliament, which as a backbencher now I fully appreciate. He will also go down as an activist modernising Speaker, but sadly not as an impartial one."
