    A man's been hurt jumping from a first-floor window to try and escape after two men forced their way into his flat.

    The 32-year-old was at home when the pair got in yesterday afternoon on Trent Valley Road, Stoke-on-Trent.

    He suffered leg and arm injuries and was taken to hospital while the two men ran off down an alleyway.

  4. GB swimmer and partner 'took drugs before fatal fire'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 23 September 2019

    An inquest has heard that a British youth swimmer and her partner killed in a fire had taken drugs before they died

    Tazmin Pugh, 18, and 21-year-old Josh Kirk were found inside a house in Cotheridge, near Worcester, in October.

    Pugh, a former member of the Ellesmere College Titans swimming squad, swam for England and Great Britain at youth level.

    Worcestershire's Coroner's Court heard the couple had significant amounts of ketamine, amphetamines and cannabis in their systems which may have contributed to their deaths.

    The fire service said a multi-gang socket caught fire after being overloaded.

    The inquest also heard how a Hungarian man lodging at the property “desperately” tried to put out the fire with buckets of water.

    The inquest continues.

    The Birmingham player overcame China's Yan Bai in three sets and will next play Bulgarian ex-world number three Grigor Dimitrov.

    Evans, ranked 48 and playing for the first time since reaching the third round of the US Open, won 6-3 4-6 7-5 (7-4).

    Andy Murray continues his comeback from hip surgery in the same event, playing American Tennys Sandgren on Tuesday.

    The Labour Party is promising to release confidential Whitehall documents relating to the so-called Shrewsbury 24 case if it wins the next general election.

    It relates to the arrest of two dozen building workers during an industrial dispute in 1972, six of them being jailed, including actor Ricky Tomlinson.

    Campaigners accuse the Conservative government of the time of "politically motivated" actions in order to discredit the trade union movement.

    The Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott told Labour's annual conference in Brighton that she wanted to see all the information disclosed.

    The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) will be completely cutting its use of single-use plastics by the end of 2020, the mayor has said.

    The WMCA recently declared a climate emergency at one of its board meetings, with the authority committing to become a zero-carbon area by 2041.

    The exact details of how it plans to achieve this goal are set to be revealed in November, when an action plan is presented to board members.

    Mayor Andy Street said he believed the region had a "moral responsibility" to lead the way.

    Gymnast Bryony Page secured Olympic qualification for Team GB thanks to a fourth place at the Trampoline World Cup in Russia at the weekend.

    Page, originally from Crewe, made it through to the final in sixth place, but climbed the table with her final routine, despite suffering ill health.

    She said almost her entire time in Russia was spent "resting in bed with tonsillitis trying to allow my body time to fight off the infection and reduce fatigue".

    Given her illness, she said she was "pretty proud" of her performance. It means GB qualify for the event at the 2020 Olympics.

    Thomas Cook travellers arrived back in Manchester on the company's last ever flight saying staff had been crying and "hugging each other".

    Karen Connolly, who was with her partner Alan Cowling and son Jamie Cowling, all from Wolverhampton, said: "We were lucky because we didn't think we were going to get back and I think it was one of the last flights.

    "There was only one lady on the plane, she was really tearful, but all the staff were really professional considering they probably won't get paid.

    "When we went to take off the captain did mention things, that they didn't know what was happening, they would have to find out in the morning.

    "We could tell by the people crying on the plane, the staff.

    "They are still crying in the terminal, hugging each other."

    Thomas Cook's flight from Orlando to Manchester landed at 08:52 - according to Flight Radar, external, it was the stricken operator's final flight.

    Anthony Speak, 64, and Wendy Willis, 57, said the atmosphere on the flight was very different from their outward journey on 8 September.

    "The staff were crying and it was very sombre," said Ms Willis.

    "But the staff were brilliant and very professional, despite not having a job when they landed."

    "We saw one of the girls in floods of tears," added Mr Speak, from Dudley, West Midlands.

    A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found in Staffordshire woodland.

    Police say a body found near the Roman Way area of Tamworth on Thursday night is that of 20-year-old Keeley Bunker, although formal identification has yet to take place.

    Wesley Streete, 19, of Tamworth, was remanded in custody at North Staffordshire Justice Centre earlier.

    He's next due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on Wednesday.

  15. Writer Jesse Armstrong wins an Emmypublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 23 September 2019

    Writer Jesse Armstrong, who grew up in Oswestry, in Shropshire, won an Emmy Award at the weekend for his work on HBO's Succession.

    The series, starring Brian Cox and Hiam Abbass, won best writing for a drama series.

    Armstrong has also worked on the likes of Peep Show, Fresh Meat, The Thick of It and Babylon, among many other credits.

    In his acceptance speech in Los Angeles, he referred to a strong night for British winners.

    A travel agent's has been packed this morning of Thomas Cook customers trying to rebook holidays, its owner's said.

    Andy Dean, who runs Oasis Travel in Stoke-on-Trent, said the tour operator's collapse was "massive", bigger than when Monarch Airlines stopped trading in 2017.

    "I have been in the business for 27 years and Monarch was big but this is huge."

    He added his firm was trying to help people who had booked holidays with Thomas Cook.

    “I had one lady who has spent £1,200 on two flights to Tenerife because every single seat for two weeks was full.”

    A man has been charged with two counts of common assault after a woman with a baby was assaulted and spat at on a bus.
