    The collapse of Thomas Cook has left 150,000 British holidaymakers abroad and the Civil Aviation Authority has triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation.

    It also puts 22,000 jobs at risk - 9,000 of them in the UK. There are also 13,000 members of Thomas Cook’s pension schemes

    But the firm's demise will also affect other businesses. The tour operator's airline was the fifth biggest carrier at Birmingham Airport.

    Wolves owner Fosun has also been feeling the heat. The Chinese firm was Thomas Cook's biggest shareholder and was primed to put £450m into a potential rescue package.

    The tourism arm of the firm has seen its shares slide nearly 5% this morning.

    A Walsall woman who flew back to the UK on one of Thomas Cook's last flights said staff were "emotional" during the journey.

    Trish Taylor who flew into Manchester Airport from Cancun said the captain, who told passengers he'd worked for the company for 25 years, said "we're in the dark as much as you, the staff are very upset, but it's our duty to get you back".

    The staff were all "totally professional," she added.

    "He flew us back, the staff were very emotional - professional, but very emotional - you could see they'd been crying - they were all crying at the back.

    "There were many, many, many more staff than what I've ever seen when you leave a plane, around the plane area.

    "We were 45 minutes kept on the plane until they parked us up in obviously a secure area where they're now holding all the planes."

    The West Midlands could be affected by heavy rain and possible thunderstorms, external on Tuesday.

    The weather front is "loosely" linked to Hurricane Humberto, which hit the edge of Bermuda and is travelling across the Atlantic towards Britain.

    The Met Office has issued the yellow weather warning for rain for Tuesday from 04:00 to 23:00.

    Worcestershire Rapids fans had a rollercoaster of emotions over the weekend as they edged their T20 Blast semi-final by a run only to lose the final on the last ball.

    Going into Finals Day as defending champions, the Pears beat Notts Outlaws off the last ball of their semi-final, with Wayne Parnell bowling a dot ball to seal the win.

    But in the final, having posted 145-9, Worcestershire had Essex on the ropes at 82-5 but then saw Ravi Bopara and Simon Harmer smash them to victory.

    Afterwards, Worcestershire skipper Moeen Ali said he was disappointed with the result but not the performance of his side.

    "We have won a few tight games like that in the last few years and we came up short this time but it wasn't for a lack of effort."

    A woman who had booked her wedding for 44 guests through Thomas Cook said she'd been left "devastated" by the company's collapse.

    Ruth Morse from Halesowen in Dudley was due to marry her partner in Cyprus on 8 October, but now doubts the wedding will go ahead.

    She booked the whole event through Thomas Cook, including the decorations, the cake, wedding venues and a private bar.

    Ruth said she had planned her "dream wedding" for two years. What makes it doubly hard is that much of the money she spent came from family members, including her mother and her late brother Ben, who was tragically murdered in 2017.

    She told the Victoria Derbyshire programme she'd been left "devastated".

    "We've been planning this since my brother was murdered," she said, "and it's been keeping my family focused and together."

    "It's just heartbreaking now that we're back to square one."

    The BBC pop-up newsroom is up and running in Stoke-on-Trent as part of our We are Stoke-on-Trent week.

    It's located on the top floor of the Intu Potteries shopping centre, next to WH Smiths and Debenhams and, if you've got a story for us, come on in and chat to a BBC reporter.

    Various BBC departments will also be based and broadcasting from the newsroom or other parts of Stoke-on-Trent this week, including Midlands Today, BBC Radio 5 Live and Newsround.

    Hawks are to be used in order to displace the feral pigeon population in Walsall.

    Walsall Council said it had been getting a lot of complaints about the mess they make.

    The two Harris Hawks, named Boris and Harriet, will be flown for a number of days each week for six months, concentrating on lunchtime periods.

    It's not the intention for them to hunt and kill the pigeons, it added, but scare them off.

    Jo Moody, who was due to go to Turkey for her silver wedding anniversary said her trip was now in doubt.

    She said she'd been watching the news every morning to find the latest information.

    "This morning we've obviously woken up to the news it's gone overnight," she said.

    "It's just really sad," she told BBC Coventry and Warwicskhire.

    "We just wanted a holiday on our own for a week away and it all seems to have gone wrong now and we might not even get away."

    "The information we have this morning is there are no flights, the hotel is obviously still there, but we don't know how we can get there."

    A murder investigation has now been launched after a man was assaulted during a row with the occupants of a passing car.

    The 23-year-old was attacked on Alcester Road South, Maypole, Birmingham on Thursday. He died in hospital on Sunday.

    Jamie Taylor, 21, of Tidworth Croft, Kings Heath, was charged with wounding before the victim died.

    West Midlands Police said that charge would be reviewed "in due course."

  18. Thomas Cook flights diverted to Birminghampublished at 09:22 British Summer Time 23 September 2019

    The BBC's Gavin Lee has been at Palma airport on Majorca where staff are advising Thomas Cook customers hoping to return to the UK today.

    He said four departure flights are being replaced like-for-like while a fifth to Glasgow would now be diverted to Birmingham.
