    A man has been charged over the discovery of three handguns and more than 500 rounds of ammunition at a home in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham on Tuesday.

    West Midlands Police said officers searched the property and found a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver and two semi-automatic pistols.

    The man has been charged with three counts of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition and is also accused of possessing cocaine with intent to supply and two counts of child neglect.

    A man who cycled three miles to his local tip was turned away with this heavy load of gardening waste.

    Ralf Meiklejohn, 50, pedalled to the recycling centre at Rotherwas on Sunday and said he was surprised to be stopped from entering.

    Herefordshire Council said that because of coronavirus, staff were asking customers in cars to wind up their windows. For that reason, it added, operator Severn Waste Services would not allow in pedestrians and cyclists for the time being.

    The authority said these rules would be relaxed when the threat of coronavirus was reduced.

    West Mercia Police says it has no new information to report following the discovery of human remains in a septic tank at Kempsey in Worcestershire 10 months ago.

    The force last July was probing the disappearance of a woman from Kempsey in 1982, and had alerted investigators searching nearby for missing Suzy Lamplugh. It went on, last summer, to say there was no link to the Met's search eight miles away in Pershore for the London estate agent.

    West Mercia Police today said its investigation over the human remains find was "ongoing".

    Specially-made glasses have been returned to a Birmingham surgeon after they were taken from his car

    Ehab Bishay, a cardiothoracic surgeon, lost them in the theft on his drive last Thursday.

    Two lung patients could not be operated on as a result.

    Mr Bishay said he opened his front door on Tuesday to find they and other items had been left on his doorstep.

    A big rise in applications for benefits during the coronavirus pandemic has got South Staffordshire Council worried that more fraudulent cases will slip through the cracks.

    It has seen extra demand for council tax support and housing benefit and has handed out about £15m in grant funding from the Government to 1,300 businesses.

    The council said it was at risk of internet fraud and had stepped up training for its staff to increase awareness of coronavirus-specific phishing and spam emails.

    A Greek restaurant in Walsall which raises money every year for good causes has found a way of supporting two campaigns, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

    Lakis Greek Kitchen is being supported by Theo's Food Company, which will be donating some of the profits from its online shop, while Street Kitchen Brothers will distribute kleftiko made by the restaurant.

    Funds raised will be used to help nine-year-old Isabelle Mason from Cannock who has a rare motor neurone condition known as Rett Syndrome, with food also supplied to Acorns Children’s Hospice in Birmingham.

    This will be the seventh year Lakis Greek Kitchen has run its annual fundraiser.

    A postmistress is believed to have become the oldest in the country at the age of 92.

    Kay White started working at Claverley Post Office, in Shropshire, in her teens and has just marked 78 years there - 60 of them in charge.

    The current coronavirus pandemic means the Claverley Post Office is temporarily shut, but Kay hopes to re-open soon.

  10. Long queues as recycling centre reopenspublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 14 May 2020

    There was a queue of more than 70 cars waiting outside the waste and recycling centre at Hanford in Stoke-on-Trent this morning.

    It has opened for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown and there have been temporary traffic lights to control the number of vehicles.

    Stoke-on-Trent's other waste and recycling centre, in Burslem, is due to reopen tomorrow morning.

    Plans to spend almost £7m to provide an extra 990 school places in Sandwell have been backed by the local authority's cabinet.

    The money will be spent on the Bristnall Hall Academy, the Q3 Academy Langley and West Bromwich Collegiate Academy.

    Sandwell Council has plans to eventually spend £21.8m to provide an extra 3,300 school places by 2025.

    Concerns have been raised over personal protective equipment sent to front-line staff in Birmingham that appears to be six years out of date.

    Birmingham City Council has written to the government for reassurances after finding 4,000 masks had 2014 use-by dates and a further supply had the 2014 date covered up with a sticker which said 2019.

  14. Huge haul of garden waste as tips set to reopenpublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 14 May 2020

    A two-week sweep of garden waste in Stoke-on-Trent has collected more than twice the normal amount of rubbish.

    The city council is due to start regular garden waste collections again on Monday, but has been sending out crews ahead of time and picked up 1,842 tonnes of waste.

    During the same two-week period last year they collected 704 tonnes.

    The council began taking appointments for bulky waste collections again yesterday and both the city's waste and recycling centres are also reopening.

    The Hanford household waste and recycling centre opened at 08:00 today and the site in Federation Road, Burslem will open at the same time tomorrow.
