  12. New data shows how quickly Bristol air pollution can be cutpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 23 July 2019

New data which reveals how quickly proposals to reduce air pollution in Bristol could work has been published.

The council is currently consulting on two alternative plans for a clean air zone in Bristol.

The research reveals all areas of the city would meet legal levels by 2029 for Option 1 of the ongoing consultation and by 2028 for Option 2.

The majority of roads in Bristol are predicted to meet compliant levels before these two dates suggested but Marlborough Street and Church Road are expected to take longer.

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “We cannot solve this problem instantly, as much as we’d like to.

"It’s going take widespread, progressive improvement across the city, involving everyone.

"The data indicates, as expected, some locations will take longer than others to reach legal levels, but this doesn’t mean air quality will not be continually improving in Bristol."

A clay model of 'rugby player gargoyle', which will be installed at Gloucester Cathedral, has been unveiled.

The maquette has been sculpted by the cathedral’s master mason, Pascal Mychalysin, and over the next six months a stone version will be carved.

It will be one of six new gargoyles which will be installed on the North Ambulatory Roof as part of a £530,000 restoration project.

The design called "Glaaaawster" features a rugby player tightly holding a rugby ball while kneeling on the ground.

Dean of Gloucester, The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, said Gloucester rugby matches attract "large numbers of loyal followers filling the city with enthusiastic fans".

"With the other ‘hallowed ground’ just a stone’s throw away from the Cathedral, it seemed only fitting that ‘Glaaaawster’ should pay tribute to this much-loved sport."

  16. 'Be water smart' call after dry winter and springpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 23 July 2019

    Andrew Segal
    BBC South West

Resident and holidaymakers in the South West are being asked to be "water smart" by regional utility South West Water (SWW).

SWW said its total reservoir storage was currently about 73%, compared to 75% at the same time last year, "reflecting the relatively dry winter and spring".

Head of Water Resources Rob Scarrott said: “Even though it often seems to rain a lot, the South West has actually had the second lowest amount of rainfall in the UK over the last six months.

“We have no immediate concerns, but we expect demand for water to increase as we head into the peak summer season."

The company provides water and sewerage services to Devon and Cornwall, plus small parts of Dorset and Somerset.
