    Bridge over former canal

A “missing mile” of canal at Whitminster, Stroud, could be restored with two new highway bridges and a towpath by the A38/A419.

It would mean the section of the canal which has been missing for half a century will reopen.

Part of the Stroudwater Navigation was destroyed when the A38/A419 roundabout and M5 were built in the late 1960s, to the west of Stonehouse.

A report going to Gloucestershire County Council's cabinet says the works will help reconnect the canal from Saul Junction to Stonehouse and provide new safe and segregated walking and cycling routes, as well as environmental improvements.

The cabinet are being asked to approve the plans later this week.

The canal already has a £4m grant from Highways England which will see waterway, locks, bridges and wetlands restored.

Clevedon beach will also get a thorough clean in July as part of the Beach-watch campaign

Abbie Edbrooke, Beach-watch organiser, says taking part in the project will also help clear the beaches, protect the wildlife and help them identify where the litter comes from and "stop it at the source".

Miss Edbrooke added: "The tide of litter washing up on our shores is not just unpleasant to look at, it can harm and even kill some of our best-loved marine wildlife."

A Somerset council has lent millions of pounds to a Singapore bank and a local authority in the Midlands over the last year. Mendip District Council lent a total of £8m over a six-month period in 2018, with all the money being repaid by the autumn.

The council said it had earned thousands of pounds in interest from the loan, and that lending a way of “ensuring the money is working” for the council and its taxpayers. It has not provided a breakdown of how the money was used or why the loans were requested in the first place.

Details of the transactions were published ahead of a meeting of the council’s audit committee on Wednesday evening (July 24).

The council lent £5m to Birmingham City Council on March 19, 2018, which the Midlands authority repaid in full with more than £10,000 of interest three months later.

A further £3M was loaned to DBS Bank Ltd – the Development Bank of Singapore – on May 1, with money being repaid on August 17 with around £6,300 of interest.

A council spokeswoman said: "The investments are investing short-term cash flow to ensure that the money is working for the council, rather than sat in a lower-paying interest account.

"The loans were short-term and purely for the return on investment."
