    A debate in Cambridge tonight - for people concerned about the impact of Brexit - is a sell out, with all 500 tickets gone. 

    The discussions at the Guildhall are being organised by Cambridge City Council and will be chaired by Daniel Zeichner MP. The speakers will include representatives from Cambridge University, Addenbrooke's Hospital and local businesses.

    Although Cambridgeshire as a whole voted to leave the EU, Cambridge itself was overwhelmingly in favour of staying.

    The East of England Ambulance Service says it's received more than a thousand hoax and inappropriate 999 calls over the past two years.

    They say that these calls divert time away from real emergencies.

    Operators at their control centre in Bedford have had calls about a cat with a broken leg, a man snoring in the back of a taxi and one about a dead squirrel.

    A 35-year-old man from Peterborough who left the UK while on bail having been arrested in connection with the murder of six-year-old Rikki Neave in 1994, is not fighting extradition proceedings.

    The boy's naked body was found in woodland near his Welland Estate home in Peterborough in November 1994. He had been strangled.

    The man is to be extradited from Portugal. He was held under a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of breaching his licence, police said. He appeared in court on Thursday.  

    Cambridgeshire Police now has 10 days to return him to the UK.

  4. Caller dials 999 for a critically injured squirrelpublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 5 August 2016

    The East of England Ambulance Service has released this recording of a 999 call from north Cambridgeshire, reporting an injured squirrel. It's part of a new plea for callers to use the service properly. 

    The trust received more than 1,144 hoax calls in the last two years - almost 200 of them the county.

    Other calls to the service included a drowning goldfish, an injured cat and a drunk man wanting a taxi.

    The service is highlighting calls like these to make people think twice about calling 999 as part of the It's Your Call , externalcampaign.

    The Rio Olympics open officially today and there are several Cambridgeshire athletes due to compete for Team GB, external.

    Dan Goodfellow - who learned to dive at Parkside Pool, external in Cambridge - will make his Olympic debut on 28 Augustin the 10m platform synchronised diving with Tom Daley.

    Goodfellow underwent shoulder surgery at the end of 2014 and only began to compete with Daley earlier this year. 

    He says: "There's always going to be pressure whoever Tom dives with and you just have to accept that, no matter what the stage is."

  6. Proposed Fulbourn homes could cause 'irreparable damage'published at 09:00

    Campaigners in Fulbourn say their village will be destroyed if a planning appeal for more than 100 executive homes, on land near two water meadows, is allowed. 

    Last August, a planning application by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa, external was unanimously rejected by councillors. Now the conglomerate is preparing to make the case once again, this time before a government inspector.

    David Cottee, secretary of Fulbourn Forum for Community Action, external said: "Most people in the village are angry. The local drainage is part of our heritage and the local fields work as part of one ecosystem. 

    "The aquifers sit under those fields and once they are built on, there could be irreparable damage."  

    A final decision on the application is expected in late autumn.

  12. Cambridge student, who died in Egypt, was feeling 'anxious'published at 17:14

    Ten days before he vanished, Cambridge University PhD student Giulio Regeni, from Italy, made a Skype call from his Cairo flat to an academic in Germany, Reuters reports.

    Mr Regeni's body was found on the side of the Cairo-Alexandria highway on 3 February by passengers on a bus that had broken down.

    Egyptian forensics officials said the body showed signs of torture, including cigarette burns and beatings. 

    Georgeta Auktor, a researcher at the German Development Institute in Bonn, said when she spoke to Mr Regeni in January he sounded anxious. 

    "We did not talk very much as it was expected that we will catch up at some point later," she said.  

    "He said he feels he needs to be careful where he goes in the city and whom he meets." 

    They did not speak again.

    The brains of obese people age more rapidly than those of thinner people in middle age, research by the University of Cambridge has found.

    Academics observed that the brains of obese people display differences in white matter similar to those in leaner individuals 10 years older. 

    White matter is the tissue that connects areas of the brain and allows information to be communicated between regions.

    Human brains naturally shrink with age, but scientists are increasingly recognising that obesity - already linked to conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease - may also affect the onset and progression of brain ageing.

    Candidates were recruited by the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience and the results are published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, external.

    Cambridgeshire Police has warned drivers about the use of mobile phones while at the wheel following the conviction of a Norfolk lorry driver of causing the death by dangerous driving of a police officer.

    Danny Warby, 28, of School Road, Runcton Holme, King's Lynn, was found guilty of causing Sharon Garrett's death.

    PC Pete Bimson, who investigated the collision, said: "This was a tragic incident... but the evidence heard in court showed it could have been avoided and it really drives home the message that using a mobile phone at the wheel can have fatal consequences.

    "Driving while using a phone is one of the 'fatal four' driving offences, along with speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and drink or drug driving, for a very good reason: it can devastate lives."Mrs Garrett, 48, joined Cambridgeshire Constabulary in 1991 and served in a number of roles across the force, most recently investigating complex fraud offences in the economic crime unit.

    The family of a Cambridgeshire police officer, killed in a crash caused by a lorry driver from Norfolk after he opened a text message, has spoken of its "devastation" at the loss of the mother-of-two.

    Danny Warby, 28, of School Road, Runcton Holme, King's Lynn, was found guilty of causing her death by dangerous driving.

    In a statement, the family of Sharon Garrett said: "We would like to express our thanks to the officers involved in the investigation, the prosecution team and of course the jury in reaching this verdict. "The whole family remains devastated by what happened in June 2014. Sharon was a wonderful woman, a hard-working and dedicated police officer. She meant so much to so many... words can never express how much we all miss her." 

    Warby has been remanded in custody until sentencing on 12 September at a venue to be fixed.
