The company said customers' water supplies are not affected, but the freezing temperatures and the proximity of the leak to the road and properties means it needed to carry out the repairs as quickly as possible.

  12. Research into dementia rates near busy roads needs more studypublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    James Gallagher

The chief scientific officer at Cambridge-based Alzheimer's Research UK, Dr David Reynolds, says a study from researchers in Canada that found people living near major roads appear more likely to develop dementia, should be looked at "much more closely".

Experts tracked more than two million people in Ontario for signs of the brain disease over the course of eleven years. The scientists suggested air pollution or noisy traffic could contribute to the brain's decline.

Dr Reynolds says the study was interesting as they now need "to work out what factors are more important" and then "see if there is something we can do about them".

Assistant coroner Simon Milburn ruled that Mrs Hawes died of natural causes because deep vein thrombosis had not been detected.

Joan Hawes was assessed by a triage nurse when she arrived at Addenbrooke's Hospital and blood tests were ordered, her family's solicitor told an inquest in Huntingdon.

However during a later examination, she was told the pain in her knee was caused by a ligament injury and the tests were cancelled.

She was discharged with painkillers and advised not to climb stairs. Mrs Hawes had spent the night downstairs.

In the morning she was found unresponsive on the toilet by her husband Terrence, 84, who called 999. A paramedic pronounced Mrs Hawes dead.

Solicitor Amanda Cavanagh said the family received a letter on Tuesday from the trust which accepted "liability and causation in the death of Mrs Hawes".

"The family are understandably deeply distressed at what has happened to Mrs Hawes - an otherwise fit and healthy woman," she said.
