  2. Canal-side robbery in Warwickpublished at 09:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    A man was robbed and threatened with being pushed into the canal, external in Warwick, say police.

    The 36-year-old had been walking along the tow path at the rear of Lidl near Myton Road around lunchtime last Thursday, when he was attacked.  

  3. Cricketer who inspired PG Wodehouse's butler rememberedpublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    A tree is to be planted in memory of a Warwickshire cricketer who died during World War One.

    Percy Jeeves, an all-rounder who was killed in the Battle of the Somme, was the inspiration for PG Wodehouse's eponymous hero. 

    The tree is being planted at Cheltenham College as part of a past players day.

    An earlier accident is causing problems on the M6 southbound at J3, A444 (Nuneaton), because of debris on the road.

    Travel time is around 40 minutes, with congestion to J3a, M6 Toll. 

    There are also problems northbound between J2, M69 (Coventry) and J3, A444 (Nuneaton), with congestion to J1, A426 (Rugby).

    Nuneaton golfer Andy Sullivan will tee off in his second Open Championship in Scotland at Royal Troon tomorrow, looking to find top form.

    Sullivan, 30, has been a model of consistency this year, missing just three cuts in 15 events, and not finishing lower than 23rd in any of the others, to keep him in the world’s Top 50, currently ranked 36th.

    Sullivan told BBC Sport: “It's just one or two holes keeping me out of that win."

    Traders along Hales Street in Coventry have told me they're upset with building works that have overrun into a second week.

    The city centre road is closed to traffic because of student accommodation development. 

    One trader told me they've been in the dark from the start, with work beginning on 27 June for an initial one-week programme.

    Developers Unite Group plc, external said the work was to replace an old sewer and the council had given them a two-week window if required. 

    In a statement, a spokesman said the road would re-open on Thursday, adding "the project has overrun by two days but we felt it was important to get this work right as doing so will benefit the city for a significant period of time".

    The process to restore a jet bomber from Britain's golden age of jet flight is under way.

    The Canberra WK163 is being dismantled in its current Coventry home in order for it to be taken to Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport.

    The aim is for it to be reassembled and restored to airworthiness by Vulcan to the Sky Trust in time for the Royal Air Force's centenary in 2018.

    The future of Coventry's annual Godiva Festival looks to be safe, but the event will have to pay for itself, the leader of Coventry City Council has said.

    The annual free festival took place for the 18th time earlier this month and featured The Charlatans, Scouting for Girls and The Boomtown Rats. 

    Councillor George Duggins said there was a "need to reduce the costs". 

    But he added that because of the "enjoyment people get out of it, it's certainly something that we'd not want to see effectively ended".

  19. Firefighters hindered by roads blocked by badly parked vehiclespublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    Warwickshire firefighters, external were unable to get to 39 incidents over the last two years because other vehicles were blocking their route.

    It's led to the start of a campaign called Park It Right, aimed at encouraging residents to not double park or obstruct corners.

    Fire officer John Gregory says it's particularly an issue in the Rugby, Nuneaton, Warwick and Stratford areas.

    Coventry will now play three-time Austrian Bundesliga winners SK Sturm Graz instead of Saudi outfit Al Ettifaq FC.

    Coventry manager Tony Mowbray told the club website, external: "The Austrian side have experience playing European football and have been champions of their country so I'm expecting a tough challenge."
