  1. Police conduct murder investigation after Coventry attackpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man found with serious head injuries, external in the Stoke area of Coventry.

    One week ago, the 36-year-old victim - discovered with life-threatening injuries at a property in Hugh Road - was taken to hospital where his condition deteriorated. He died on 31 August.

    Two men were charged with attempted murder. They remain in police custody while detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the man's death.

    A successful bid for UK City of Culture 2021 would provide a "major economic uplift" to Coventry, according to some of the city's biggest businesses.

    Companies and the Coventry Business Improvement District have come together to lend support to the bid through sponsorship and financial investment.

    Amelia is the most popular girls name in the West Midlands while Muhammad is the most popular for boys, according to the Office for National Statistics. 

    Only London had Muhammad as the most popular choice in 2014 but the new figures show the West Midlands has joined the capital in 2015 for having the most babies with that name. Oliver was most popular overall across England and Wales.

    There were 649 Muhammads born in the West Midlands in 2015 compared with 622 Olivers. An alternative spelling - Mohammed - is also in the top 10.

    For girls regionally, the top choice, Amelia, was the same as the overall favourite in England and Wales.

    The data also shows the West Midlands to have a higher proportion of girls named Jessica than anywhere else. It ranks third for popularity in the region.

  7. West Midlands Police faces £1.5m Tory conference billpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A police force is facing a £1.5m bill to plan safety operations for the next three Conservative Party conferences, its crime commissioner has said.

    PCC David Jamieson said it would cost West Midlands Police about £500,000 a time when the Tories meet in Birmingham in October and return in 2018 and 2020.

    He has written to Home Secretary Amber Rudd to ask for a discussion about a "fairer arrangement".

    The Home Office said the funding had been reviewed as "fairer" than before. The ICC in Birmingham previously hosted the Conservative Party conference in 2014.

  10. Requiem for Coventry musician lost at The Sommepublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A hundred years to the hour after city violinist Montague Johnson was lost at the Battle of the Somme, a requiem performance , externalwill be held to mark the occasion he last went out to battle.

    The event is a collaboration between two companies, Theatre Absolute and Talking Birds, who've been researching his work over a number of years.

    His story came to light after being featured in the permanent display of fallen soldiers at the War Memorial Park put together by historian Trevor Harkin.

    Julia Negus, producer from Theater Absolute, said the "unique performance" would take place near the stained glass window at St John's Baptist Church "that records his name anongst other fallen soldiers".

    A rare 1961 Jaguar, owned by Sir William Lyons, founder of Jaguar, goes under the hammer this weekend. 

    The car is expected to fetch around £100,000. 

    Manufactured  at the Coventry factory, the model was a top of the range saloon from 1961 to 1970, and originally designed with the US market in mind.
