    The Prime Minister will use visits to the University of Warwick and Jaguar Land Rover today to highlight some of the "expertise Britain can offer the world" ahead of meeting leaders at next week's G20 summit, her office says.

    Along with the Chancellor, Theresa May has pledged to "strike the best deal for British businesses" as they set out on a tour of the West Midlands.

    Mrs May said she was "determined" to maximise opportunities following the Brexit vote.

    The trip follows an announcement of investment worth £35m in a new automotive business zone on the outskirts of Coventry.

  3. 'Dangerous' dogs shot dead by policepublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Two dogs described by police as "pit bull-type" have been shot dead by officers at a property in Harnall Lane East in Coventry.

    Police say they were carrying out a warrant at the address around 04:30 and found the dogs "acting aggressively".

    A statement from West Midlands Police said: “It was felt the dogs posed a genuine danger to officers, with the potential to seriously injure someone.

    “Specialists from our dog unit attempted to secure them but it wasn’t possible to get close enough without putting police or the wider public at risk, so both were shot dead by armed officers."

    A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a prohibited dog and is in custody.

    Coventry have signed Newcastle full-back Jamie Sterry and West Brom striker Andre Wright on loan until January.

    Sterry, 20, made his first Magpies start in their 2-0 EFL Cup win over Cheltenham last week and recently agreed a new four-year contract.

    Wright, who can also play on the wing, has yet to feature for the Baggies in a first-team match.

  5. Investment should create 'highly-skilled' jobs says governmentpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A £35m investment in the Coventry automotive sector should lead to highly-skilled engineering an manufacturing jobs in the region, the government says.

    It says its funding will help improve local industrial transport links, connecting the site with the A45, and constructing a new bridge to join the new development with an existing Jaguar Land Rover engineering centre.

    The site is being developed with another £10m support from Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Warwick District Council and Coventry City Council.

  6. Man charged with child sexually assaulting childrenpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A 34-year-old man from Leamington Spa has been charged with four counts of sexually assaulting children, say police, external

    They relate to two people under the age of 18 in the area in 2016.

    He has also been charged with robbery and theft and released on bail to appear in court later this month.

  7. Cancer patient helps unlock the mysteries of DNApublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A cancer patient being treated in Coventry has become the first in the West Midlands to have his complete genetic code mapped for a project that could help deliver new treatments.

    John Whitney is taking part in the nationwide 100,000 Genomes Project, external, collecting samples which are then studied for genetic mutations.

    Scientists believe that comparing all of the patients' results will help them develop new tests and treatments for lesser understood diseases.

    John’s donated sample was taken by a team at University Hospital while he had an operation to remove his kidney after being diagnosed with renal cancer in May.

  8. 'Car key' burglary arrestspublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Two women have been arrested on suspicion of so-called car key burglaries in Rugby., external

    They were arrested after police spotted a BMW they suspected of being stolen on a driveway in Heather Close last week.

    The women have been bailed until the beginning of October while investigations continue.

  9. Car crashes into overturned lorry on A46published at 10:02 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A car crashed into an overturned lorry on the A46 this morning, before bursting into flames.

    The ambulance service says it was called to the scene around 06:15 and no-one was hurt.

    One lane remains closed at the A3400 Birmingham Road junction.

  11. Government investment in car sector could create thousands of jobspublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Up to 3,000 jobs could be created in Coventry after the government confirmed a £35m investment in a new automotive business zone on the outskirts of the city.

    The Whitley South Infrastructure Project, between the A45 and Coventry Airport, will cost  £45m and provide land for car parts suppliers and improve transport links around the area.

    Work on the 60-acre site is expected to begin in the next few months.
