    A number of Olympians and Paralympians will be given a glimpse into their life after sport at a special event in Coventry today.

    The Athlete Futures event at the Ricoh Arena allows the competitors to talk to businesses about how their skills can translate into employment. 

    They will also get advice from former athletes about how to cope with the transition.

  2. Police chiefs set to unveil 'major modernisation' of forcepublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    West Midlands Police are announcing plans to modernise the force. 

    The Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson, and the Deputy Chief Constable will reveal details of the programme, which includes high-definition body-worn cameras for police officers and new smart phones so they can receive information on the go. 

    They say it will be the biggest review of policing in the force area in recent years.

  3. Coventry half marathon set to get council fundingpublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Funding worth £50,000 supporting next year's Coventry half marathon is expected to be agreed by councillors.

    The event was in doubt after organisers GO2 Events chose not to renew their contract.

    Deputy council leader, Abdul Khan, says it will give the council time to decide whether the race has a long term future.

    A man was stabbed in the back after an argument broke out during a football match in Bedworth, say police., external

    They say they believe the 31-year-old was playing football with friends at the Miners Walfare Park on Sunday, and was stabbed after an argument with two other men.

    No arrests have been made, but a knife has been recovered from the scene, a spokesman said.

    Detectives are investigating a possible link between the discovery of a woman's body in Henley Green, Coventry, and a man suffering serious injuries in the same area. 

    Officers discovered the body of a 41-year-old woman in Chudleigh Road on Sunday afternoon and say her death is "unexplained". A post-mortem examination is to be held.

    Hours later a man was found collapsed in the city's Henley Road and two men were later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. 

    However, West Midlands Police stressed a possible link between the two incidents was just "one line of inquiry" being investigated. 

  10. Sunday third busiest day of year for 999 callspublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Sunday was the third busiest day of the year for 999 calls, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service, external.

    In total, the Trust received 3,591 emergency calls across the region, compared with 3,154 the weekend before.

    Managers blamed a combination of Halloween, Diwali, a payday weekend and an extra hour, due to the clocks going back.

    They praised staff who "worked incredibly hard to ensure patients continued to receive excellent care".

    Only New Year's Day and 19 July, when temperatures soared, were busier.

  14. Fire crews tackle barn blazepublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Firefighters are battling a barn fire where about 320 tonnes of hay are alight in Sherbourne. 

    Up to 20 Warwickshire firefighters are at the blaze in Church Road which is expected to cause some delays to traffic, a spokesman for the county's fire service said. 

    Crews are set to be at the incident overnight and the cause of fire is not yet known.

    The Sky Blues midfielder Ivor Lawton has returned to action a year after suffering knee ligament damage. 

    The 21-year-old, who made his comeback in the Under-23s game against Colchester, said he was "buzzing to be back on the pitch".

  17. Appeals continue after shooting near parkpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Detectives are continuing to appeal for information after a 22-year-old man was shot near Coventry's War Memorial Park on Saturday. 

    The man was shot in the arm and leg on the Coat of Arms Bridge Road, which runs alongside the park, at about 17:30. He is in a stable condition in hospital, West Midlands Police said on Sunday. 

    Detectives have carried out a forensic search of the scene and are reviewing CCTV film.
