  2. CCTV to keep rail users' bikes safepublished at 16:22 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Two new CCTV cameras have been installed to protect bikes left at Nuneaton railway station.

    The cameras were funded by £12,000 from Warwickshire County Council, external, which says it is aiming to “boost cycle use”.

    Over the summer new stands, which can store up to 48 cycles, were installed at the station, along with a bike repair stand.

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was found with serious injuries at a house in Coventry, police say. 

    Officers were called by the ambulance service to Henley Road at about 22:00 on Sunday following reports a man had collapsed, West Midlands Police say.

    "The 48-year-old was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition," a police spokeswoman added. 

    The men, aged 46 and 49, are being questioned by detectives.

    An additional £50,000 "contingency budget" to support the Coventry Half Marathon for 2017 is expected to be approved by councillors, external

    Coventry City Council say the money would "enable the event to continue" and provide the "financial security" for it to stage a race in 2017.

  14. Elf or Home Alone? Choose the Christmas filmpublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    The vote for the "headline film" at this year’s Christmas Films in the Square event in Warwick is very close, say organisers. 

    Home Alone has “crept into the lead” with 132 votes, ahead of Elf which has 131, says WarwickRocks, external, who have asked residents to vote on its Facebook page.

    Members of the public are being asked to help create a record of ritual markings on buildings that were once believed to ward off evil spirits.

    The "witches' marks" were often carved near entrances to buildings, including the house where Shakespeare was born and the Tower of London.

    The symbols were believed to offer protection when belief in witchcraft and the supernatural was widespread.

    Known examples include several found at Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, where they are carved near the cellar door where beer would have been stored, and at the Tithe Barn, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, to protect crops. 

    Heritage agency Historic England says too little is known about them.

  17. Woman's body found in housepublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    A woman's body has been found at a house in Coventry.

    Police were called to Chudleigh Road (pictured) at about 15:00 on Sunday "following a call from a concerned family member", a West Midlands Police, external spokeswoman said.

    "Officers forced entry to the property and the body of a 41-year-old woman was discovered," she said.  

    The death is currently being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.
