    The railway line between Birmingham New Street and International has re-opened.

    It was closed when a train hit a person near International earlier this morning, causing rush hour disruption for passengers.

    Trains are likely to remain delayed for the next hour or so as services settle, but Virgin Trains' 08:50 service to London Euston has set off, calling at all stations - including International and Coventry.

    A replacement bus service is running between Birmingham New Street and Coventry after a person was hit by a train near Birmingham International this morning, causing delays that are expected to last until at least midday.

    Network Rail in Birmingham says buses will be available outside New Street's main entrance, near the TK Maxx store.

    Passengers are being told to follow the hashtag #BirminghamInt, external on Twitter.

    All train lines between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International are "blocked" this morning, Virgin Trains says. 

    The train operator is warning passengers to expect delays after a person was hit by a train.

    London Midland and Chiltern Railway are accepting tickets, external and buses have been requested to operate between Birmingham New Street and Coventry.

  14. Man jailed for £20m drugs import attemptpublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2016

    A Birmingham man who tried to smuggle £20m worth of ecstasy tablets and cannabis through Coventry Airport has been jailed for nine years.

    Simon Dunmore, 41, from St Mary's Row in Moseley admitted six counts of importing drugs at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

    Seven packages were seized by Border Force officials in May last year, addressed to Dunmore's catering business address in Harborne Road, containing skunk and MDMA hydrochloride, the chemical used in ecstasy tablets.

    When Dunmore went to collect a further consignment of 100,000 ecstasy tablets, police officers were waiting to arrest him.

    The Four Nations tournament director says Coventry could be in line to host games in the 2021 World Cup. 

    England take on Scotland at the Ricoh Arena tomorrow - before Australia meet New Zealand.

    Jon Dutton, who is also tournament director for England's bid to be World Cup host nation, told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire the Ricoh would be a front-runner for the competition in five years' time, based on its preparation for tomorrow's Four Nations match.

  18. Judge praises teenage girls injured in stabbing attackpublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2016

    A judge has commended the bravery of two teenage girls who were attacked by a man with a knife as they walked near the River Derwent at Barepot in Cumbria.

    Adrian Mark Fallows, 39, of Jodrell Street, Nuneaton, stabbed one of the girls three times, puncturing one of her lungs. She spent almost a week in hospital.

    At Carlisle Crown Court Fallows, who admitted assault and assault causing grievous bodily harm, was jailed for 11 years and told he must serve at least two thirds of the sentence.

    Judge Peter Davies said he was "enormously impressed" by the bravery of the two girls, who'd battled their attacker even after one was stabbed.  

    He directed they should be commended and rewarded.
