    Reg Jackson said he was told as a child that Rugby had a castle with a moat in Regent Place and could we find out more.

    According to the council's Conservation Area assessment, there is documentary evidence of a possible medieval castle at Regent Place.

    It says the earthwork of a moat was recorded here in the late 19th Century.  

    The local history group records that Regent Place was known as Moat Street until being renamed in 1925.

    A group in Coventry is warning that some older people could be staying at home because of a lack of public toilets in the city. 

    Six facilities were closed by the city council under cost-saving measures earlier this year. 

    Coventry Older Voices, who represent the over-50s in the city, says with just two public toilets left in the city centre, some people are too anxious of travelling into town.

    A government scheme to boost childcare for three and four-year-olds will deliver only a "small" increase in parents working, a new study has found.

    Researchers from the universities of Warwick and Essex along with the Institute for Fiscal Studies said the change, due next year, was likely to lead to only a "modest number of mothers and no fathers" moving into paid work.

    At least 1,782 facilities have closed across the UK in the last decade, Freedom of Information requests found.

    Community group Coventry Older Voices is warning that older people in Coventry are fearful of travelling due to a lack of public toilets.

    The Local Government Association said councils were trying to keep toilets open but faced squeezed budgets.

    Public toilets have existed on UK high streets for more than 150 years but there is no legal requirement for local authorities to provide toilets, meaning they are often closed down if councils cannot afford the upkeep.

    West Midlands Police is now one of 18 forces to investigate allegations of historic assaults in football.

    The NSPCC children's charity said more than 860 people had called its dedicated football hotline, set up a week ago after several former players alleged past abuse by coaches across the country.

    The National Police Chiefs' Council said 55 amateur and professional clubs had been linked to police investigations in 17 force areas.

  11. Police launch Christmas crackdown on drink-drivingpublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2016

    West Midlands Police is launching its annual Christmas crackdown on driving under the influence of drink and drugs. 

    Last year, just under half of the 130 people stopped by officers tested positive for drugs, while 18% of drivers were found to be over the drink-drive limit or refused a breath test.

    MPs Craig Tracey and Marcus Jones say they're seeking an urgent meeting with the Department of Health over the future of services at George Eliot Hospital.

    A statement issued by the pair over a report revealing A&E services at the hospital were under review said moving services would "not be in the best interests" of patients in Nuneaton or North Warwickshire.

    "If these proposals were pursued, this would do great damage to the George Eliot Hospital and the fantastic service it provides to our community. 

    "We will vigorously fight any plans that may be brought forward."

    Nathan Hughes and Marland Yarde will start for England against Australia at Twickenham tomorrow, in two forced changes to Eddie Jones' side.

    Wasps' Hughes replaces the injured Billy Vunipola at number eight, while Harlequins' Marland Yarde will start on the wing in place of the suspended Elliot Daly.

  14. Poets' Corner memorial for Philip Larkinpublished at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2016

    A memorial to poet Philip Larkin is to be unveiled in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey today.

    A floor stone dedicated to Coventry-born Larkin - who died in 1985 - will join the names of the country's best-loved poets including WH Auden, TS Eliot and William Wordsworth.

    Today marks the 31st anniversary of Larkin's death.
