    The improvement in Coventry's primary schools has been highlighted in an Ofsted annual report., external

    The city now has 94% of its primary pupils at "good" or "outstanding" schools; more than double the amount it had in 2012, making Coventry the most improved city in the country.

    Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief inspector, said the "dramatic" improvement was a result of the "hard work and focus of Coventry’s political and school leaders".

    But the report also highlights the city as being one of the lowest performing authorities for GCSE pupils achieving A/A* in English and maths.

    Coventry has among England's highest rates of homelessness, according to the charity Shelter. 

    It says almost 1,700 people - one in 204 - live in the city without a permanent roof over their heads.

    The charity, releasing figures to mark its 50th anniversary, calculates there are almost 255,000 people with no permanent address across the country.

    The government says it does not recognise the figures, but is investing more than £500m on homelessness.

    A few days ago we told you about a drawing of an injured police dog being auctioned to raise money to help a little boy with cancer.

    Alex Goodwin, nine, from Lutterworth in Leicestershire, has Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone cancer, and his family's been raising money to help with his treatment.

    Alex became besotted with the story of police dog Finn, stabbed protecting his handler from a suspected armed robber in Stevenage last month.

    He drew a picture of the recovering dog which was made into Christmas cards. His original was auctioned, raising more than £1,300.

    Well, Special Constable Rosie Lee, from Warwickshire Police, was the joint highest bidder and has just received her picture.

    She sent us a photo of it, saying she was "over the moon" to be the "proud owner of Alex's picture of Finn".

    And in case you didn't know, Alex is going to get the treatment his family wants, after funds were topped up to £120,000 by an anonymous donor earlier this week.

    Police say Edward Morey, 27, was last seen on Saturday 26 November.

  13. Woman sentenced for child cruelty offencespublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    A 56-year-old woman has been charged with four counts of child cruelty offences. 

    Christine Button, who lived in Woodend, Atherstone, at the time the offences were committed, pleaded guilty to four counts, but denied three other counts.

    Warwickshire Police say, external all the offences took place between 1 September 2013 and 30 November 2014. 

    She was sentenced earlier today at Warwick Crown Court and given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years. 

    Ms Button was also given a four-month curfew, 100 hours unpaid work and disqualified from working with children under 16.
