    West Midlands Combined Authority has approved its biggest slice of devolution funding to date - almost £100m for a city centre development in Coventry, the city council, external said.

    The council added that this cash from the combined authority effectively gives it the go-ahead for the £360m City Centre South scheme. Plans include a retail, residential and leisure scheme.

    The development (illustrated above and below) will sit between the Upper Precinct, Greyfriars Road and Warwick Road and connects up with Bull Yard, where it picks up the new boulevard connection to the railway station.

    Prize-winning young writers are going to be offered a 10-week residency, external by the University of Warwick.

    The university says it's now a partner in the annual Sunday Times/Peter Fraser and Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award. 

    The award is given to the best work of published or self-published fiction, non-fiction or poetry by a British or Irish author aged between 18 and 35.  

    From next year the university says it will offer the residency alongside a one-day festival.

    More than 3,200 people have applied to join West Midlands Police, the force says., external

    They're taking on 1,150 staff, including 800 officers, ending a five-year recruitment freeze.  

    During the two-week application phase the force received a total of 3,266 submissions from members of the public, and 118 from current staff and the region's Special Constabulary.

    People are being urged not to go to the Accident and Emergency department at Coventry's University Hospital unless their condition is urgent or life-threatening.

    The trust running the hospital says demand at the unit has been building over several days. 

    It says staff have been working to free up beds and give safe care but that there are still high numbers of people turning up.

    Brother and sister Josh and Sam Marsh, from Coventry Cycle Speedway Club, have both been chosen for the Great Britain cycle speedway squad for next year's world championships in Australia.

    The sport involves four riders going head-to-head over four laps of a short oval dirt-track on bicycles which don't have brakes.

    Road bosses are asking drivers for their opinion on how to upgrade junction 6 of the M42 motorway, external

    Highways England have come up with three options and will be consulting with motorists, residents and business owners for the next seven weeks. 

    It will involve a dual carriageway to either the east or west of Bickenhill, with the aim of improving traffic access to Birmingham Airport and the NEC, as well as preparing for the planned HS2 rail link.
